These are the start of the minutes of the Polka Fan Club.

The meeting was held in Blat on Saturday afternoon. In attendance were sparky and joe bloggs and starchild. We waited for ZoWie, but he was busy. Mongo and Todd were in Great Barrington. Hockey guy was being destructive.

We're up to 11 pages, now....

There was a local band here, the Imprints, who for some unknown reason did a cover version of "Funky Town" in their standard set. They always introduced it as a "Chinese Polka."

Once I thought about it, I realized it was a perfect description.

Imprints: Secretary's Tune (which was pretty good) and Happy Together (which could have been much more punk)

Sis complaining that a song wasn't punk enough? I knew you were a closet punker all along, I just knew it.

Allow me to insert some more minutes from this afternoon's meeting of the Polka Fan Club, if I may.

Sparky was awarded one fourth of a vote, Star & I 1-1/2 votes each. The name chosen was "Blundering Kielbasas."

It was determined that this organization shall not have a logo, as anything we could come up with looked obscene.

let's point out that the vote "handicaps" were adjusted after we tried to get sparky to actually vote, for about 10 minutes, while he blundered about.

after we voted on the name, we voted to provide polka pr here (or something), and then we voted to meet again.

a quite productive polka meeting.

Where did this name for round circles of dye on clothing originate? And what, if anything, does it have to do with the dance of the same name?

In the 1880s, the polka was sweeping America. It was the latest dance craze, like the Charleston of the 1920s or the Macarena of a few summers ago. In an effort to cash in on the fad, manufacturers began naming all sorts of thing polka. Polka gauze, polka hats, polka curtain bands and many other products with the polka name hit the market in the 1880s. Of these, only polka dots survive today.

There are two possible origins for the word polka. It could come from the Czech pulka, or half-step, Pul meaning half. Or, it could be a combination of the polonaise and mazurka.

Oh, yeah--and if you see any garage sales, stop & look for a used accordian!
