"Musical Greats Honored at Nominee Reception"
Guthrie's award was accepted by his children, Nora and Arlo, who quoted their father's writing: "Music is a way of saying what is on your mind; no mind, no music."

"Positive power of music fosters harmony in kids"
...
Pam firmly believes in the positive power of music. Teach children to sing together and maybe they won't shoot each other. Teach them to beat rhythms together and they'll sense their connection to each other. Teach them to dance and they'll always have a release.
"People used to get together and sing," Pam says. "They don't anymore, and that's too bad. It builds community. Get strangers together and they're happy when they're singing."
...
Children dance to music from Mexico, Africa and Ireland, as well as to Woody Guthrie tunes. They chant about frogs -- "I had a little frog, I named him Tiny Tim. I put him in the bathtub to see if he could swim."

This Land Is Your Land: The Life and Legacy of Woody
Guthrie
May 27, 2000 - mid-late Oct. 2000 (TBA)
This exhibition follows folk singer Woody Guthrie's (1912-1967) life through his
personal history and artistic development. The exhibition also explores how he
infused in his music the tragedies and hard times of the common man, which gave
his music purpose and sparked a life-long dedication to social activism. The
conclusion features such contemporary artists as Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen,
and Billy Bragg, who have been influenced by his work.

Does this mean the Woody Guthrie exhibit won't be ending in early Sept but will be ending in Oct instead? If so, great! We wanted to hit it on the way back from Arlos's Baltimore show but am don't know if we can cuz of my folks going with Mike & I. If this is on until Oct, then if we can't make it in May we could stay over nite after Farmaid & then go to the exhibit the day after Farmaid. I was planning to drive home the day after Farmaid but if I have to we'll have to shell out the $$$ for a motel. If anyone has anymore info I'd appreciate it! Peace!

Elliott returns to Memphis for a special night of music, "Woody & Me: A Tribute to Woody Guthrie." The show - to be filmed by WKNO-TV for summer broadcast - also has folk greats Odetta, Richie Havens, Tom Paxton and Josh White Jr. The last time these musicians
converged was for two similar Guthrie tributes, one at Carnegie Hall in 1968 and the other at the Hollywood Bowl in 1970. Three decades later, Guthrie's name can still gather the four winds of folkdom, this time in a benefit for the Bluff City's Bornblum Solomon Schechter School.

(This concert was held on April 2, 2000.)
