Well i do agree with the "it is not such a far slide to the primitive", we have the gulf coast experience as recent proof of that and growing up in Oklahoma in the 30's as my parents did is also a recent reminder of how civilized people can so quickly be converted to a herd of vermin on the land. I know that sounds negative but facts are facts and there were plenty of real Tom Joads. I know, I went to High School with a lot of their kids who got in trouble in Bakersfield or Barstow and were sent back to OKC in the late sixties / early seventies to get them away from those "bad California influences." I am rambling on again but I'll be back!

Oh ya, I want to say my disillusionment with My Generation wasn't about failed dreams or unrealistic goals, I guess I thought there were more of us than there really were who wanted to Sing Loud in full orchestration and three billion part multi-lingual non-boundary harmony and all that stuff

...i imagine if i were to ask that same question,,,i'd be up s**t creek!

now shut up and write!!

and larry too...i love this kind of sharing though i'm not always very good at it...

i can think of no cultural icon of his generation my dad connected with (except maybe erol flynn/robin hood) his being able to hit a bulls eye with an arrow and then splitting that arrow with another and all...i have a bow he gave me that he hand carved from a straight enough tree branch (ash) (the standard i hold all bows to) from my observation, there are self proclaimed intellectuals and then there are others who have degrees even and certificates blah, blah who appreciate and embrace the oddities and self taught ways of my dad (they had to "burn down the schoolhouse to get [him] outta the second grade") he happens to be christian and is at the same time indian (native american) and very much connected with the earth (aren't we all, but you know what i mean)
i learned nothing about pop culture from my dad. he could sing and play guitar which he does well (when i was 15, i acquired what would be the community guitar...i still have it!) , he got into ham radio (eventually), had "learn spanish" records (which he did...surprised me one day when he broke out in fluent spanish with a guy (who was spanish), had to laugh, "i didn't know you knew spanish!"), a bible (maybe 20), had lot's of good stories, taught himself and used morse code, could build more out of bottle caps and wire than anyone i know...blah, blah, blah...blah, blah...blah, blah...there's more, but blah, blah, blah..blah.

what does it all mean??

Come on guys. PS is right. There was was a protest here on Sunday. Less than ten thousand people showed. There should have been enough of us to shut the fucking city down. I agree. What happened to that dream I still have in my heart?

Now would you believe I am at this particular moment at page 49 of Annie Proulx's book "That Old Ace in the Hole"?
Now I've been planning on reading her books for a few years and saw the movie The Shipping News a few years ago and Brokeback Mt recently.
But a few days ago something just made me finally get this book out of the library. (I read every day, in my morning tea and lunch breaks at work, when I go to bed, or any other spare minute but rarely read fiction, novels etc, 'cos I like to read real stuff about real people, politics, sociology, biography's etc)
Now here you are writing about how your Dad was born at Canadian River, and I'm right now reading about all kinds of Oklahoma stuff including Canadian River.
There's even a part on page 14 and15 where Bob Dollar is describing all kinds of stuff about his Uncle Tams' friend Bromo including how he got kicked off a plane for refusing to put the window shade down during the movie and all kinds of other stuff, and how for years he's been writing an essay entitled "This Land is NOT your Land".
I could really identify with him and the stuff that irritates him. He could be a Blunderite, he'd fit in real well. If you haven't read it I know you'll get a kick out of it especially you Boomer Spooners and people who live in or come from that SHRUB state, where some of our favourite Blunderites live!!!
Just thought how it's interesting that though we are on opposite sides of the world our thoughts can connect about something at the same time?
Larry have you been smoking something?? You were actually being serious. Please don't get too serious or I'd miss the old you, same with you PS, your stuff helps keep me sane in this crazy world.

I to have been feeling like everyone is kinda givin up. I mean now 75% say maybe the war was not such a good idea, but it took most of them 3 years to wake up!! I feel like screaming "How could you be so ingnorant!! Why wouldn't you listen and inform yourselves back then, instead of calling me and others traitors etc. for marching in Feb '03 and since."But I agree with Shel and feel a surge arising here as well as there and am becoming more hopeful of what will happen in the next few years.
We can't give up This Land is still OUR Land.
I'm astonished (or maybe not I guess) that when Shrub was asked about what would happen if in a few years the WAR was still going he said something about how it was up to FUTURE Presidents to sort it out!!! TYPICAL!!! The story of his life!

Louise, I am not that serious, hell I am a post modern existenital rock and roll darma bum for crying out loud, how can you take that seriously. And, I talked about stations in life, my old man started his career on the killing floor passing bolts through animals heads for Wilson's Meats and Sporting Goods down in Cowtown, OKC. Not considered a particularly intellectual position in life. THe thing that makes him unique was his admiration for intellectual pusuit because we all know that the populous feeling on this (not particularly his generation) is decidedly anti-intellectual ("then they got that samart alecky kid came in here from that uni-versity with all his smart "theories" and stuff going tell me i am related to a monkey"). Agnes, my dad surprised me one day when I found he could speak Czechoslovakian becasue in the particular area we lived was settled by a community of Czech who were probably real "Sooners" and many of their sons worked in line next to my dad on the killing floor. On Native Americans, I got a great story about my Grandfathers Uncle Andrew Martinez, Adopted son of the Kiowa Chief Ten Bears and a Medicine Man of the Kiowa tribe who participated in the Red River Wars (1876 or so) and later sort of converted to a blend of Christian/Kiowa Shamanism, maybe sometime.

There was actually an old Czech cemetary dating back to the 1880's on the section where the house I was cleaning out is located, and 1880's is fricking old for mans traces in that part of the world. I new this girl with bright red hair (cream colored skin of course) who used to dress in black and sit in that cemetary at night and listen to Black Sabbath (whent their first and second album's came out), is that proto Goth or what! She was pretty nice lookin' and I thought about going out there and sitting with her (we all know what motivates the male!) but I didn't like black sabbath that much and I thought it a little to creepy.

edited again to add ,thats pretty old for traces of European Man in that country,

What does it all mean? That's a very general question, but I'll take a shot at it in very general terms:
It human terms, everything.
In cosmic terms, nothing.

It just hit me that I said that the president can be serious about silly stuff, which is true. But I should add, to be fair, balanced and accurate, that he is just as often silly about serious stuff. Trouble is, it's either one or the other, and he don't know he's doing it. It's sort of the yin and yang of bushism, and what makes bush bush, and what makes us shit our pants.

i don't really know what to say about this, except that i shared it with my good friend because i figured we'd share a certain recognition looking back on all of it, and smile about it...which we did.

"good times, good times..."

oh come on Agnes, tell me more, tell me more?

Has anybody ever heard of Walter Langer? I was rummaging through my old mans books and new most of them having rummaged through them over the years and he had a fondness, like many men of his generation, for the gritty details of WWII. As a child i had inherited this chivalric interest in war commentary as boys have done through time remembered. I hit upon a group of books that were a strange mixture of Machiavelli and Asimov, Confucious and Gandhi, Zen and Tao, and they were mixed in with books on some of the more peculiar aspects of WWII, death camp memoirs and SS confessions and such (with pictures that proved that the Enlightenment was absolute hoax and all). I passed through these (I did spare a few from the rummage sale that are now neatly packed in unopened boxes in the garage) but they didn't really peak that late night curiosity until i found a book labeled "Why the evil genius acted the way he did, "A Masterpiece"

In my last and probably most heartfelt religious period I was a devout Crumbunist. I could spout the gospel according to Mr. Natural and the Rock of his church Flakey Foont and my favorite sacred texts were the stories of WhiteMan and Bo Bo Belinski (he's no big deal) and Ducks (I can hear the sirens again) Yas Yas. My favorite was the portrayal of the father himself, "R." stomping through his flat with the city of buildings with cave holes for windows and he was pointing his finger at the view finder and spouting in an emotional and irrational manner "I have been called an Evil Genius by cities full of assholes!"

I used to walk through the streets of southside OKC thinking of this type of thing with a certain colorful gleam in my eye pondering the cemetary and a buxom red head dressed in black and my mind full of Crumbunist sexual fantasies (if you are aware of Mr. Crumbs works you know my mind is not necessarily pristine when it comes to women at times but hey, like Bob, at least I am honest about it). And, amazingly that brings me to another point, I found well preserved pornography in my parents house in the same area as the book on the mind of the evil genius (is this cosmic or what!)!!!I found pristine copies of the Playboy with Jessica (I understand your weakness Jim Baker) Hahn and the Penthouse with Jimmy Swaggart on the cover cryin at the pews they he made a mistake (Lookin' through the pages I gotta say Jimmy, if your going to let the devil (was that his penis or an apparition of the brain) pilot your actions for a bit, well son, son, son, if your paying for sin you might reconsider your options (long winded way of saying Jessica was a better deal). But maybe it was God, God who wanted Brother Jimmy to experience the filth, get a true taste of the basal matter of which men (and women) are made of. I did love the final picture of the used condom and the soiled tissue on the floor near the chair where our antagonist experienced his carnal weakness!!!

I hope that wasn't too serious Louise!!!
