A west Texas cowboy was herding his herd in a remote pasture when suddenly a brand-new BMW advanced out of a dust cloud towards him. The driver, a young man in a Brioni suit, Gucci shoes, Ray Ban sunglasses and YSL tie, leans out the window and asks the cowboy,

"If I tell you exactly how many cows and calves you have in your herd, will you give me a calf?"

The cowboy looks at the man, obviously a yuppie, then looks at his peacefully grazing herd and calmly answers, "Sure, Why not?"

The yuppie parks his car, whips out his Dell notebook computer, connects it to his AT&T cell phone, and surfs to a NASA page on the Internet, where he calls up a GPS satellite navigation system to get an exact fix on his location which he then feeds to another NASA satellite that scans the area in an ultra-high-resolution photo.

The young man then opens the digital photo in Adobe Photoshop and exports it to an image processing facility in Hamburg, Germany. Within seconds, he receives an email on his Palm Pilot that the image has been processed and the data stored. He then accesses a MS-SQL database through an ODBC connected Excel spreadsheet with hundreds of complex formulas. He uploads all of this data via an email on his Blackberry and, after a few minutes, receives a response.

Finally, he prints out a full-color, 150-page report on his hi-tech, miniaturized HP LaserJet printer and finally turns to the cowboy and says, "You have exactly 1586 cows and calves."

"That's right. Well, I guess you can take one of my calves," says the cowboy. He watches the young man select one of the animals and looks on amused as the young man stuffs it into the trunk of his car. Then the cowboy says to the young man, "Hey, if I can tell you exactly what your business is, will you give me back my calf?"

The young man thinks about it for a second and then says, "Okay, why not?"
"You're a consultant for the Republican Party." says the cowboy.

"Wow! That's correct," says the yuppie, "but how did you guess that?"

"No guessing required." answered the cowboy. "You showed up here even though nobody called you; you want to get paid for an answer I already knew, to a question I never asked; and you don't know anything about my business........ Now give me back my dog."

Pretty good game in Norman last night! I enjoyed the outcome! Have to go back to that end zone someday?

it was only just a tad chilly out today!

It is the time of year I guess I suppose, that always makes me turn nostalgic for the places I have been and the people I have long since left by the road. Or the thousands of miles I used to travel across the plains in search of tommorrow. So I was waxing nostalgic / philosophic in my head with spontaneous You tube queries and was passing through a thousand memories when I found two of particular songs of high sentimental value. I was thinking about how people are always concerned about my soul as I have on many occasions rejected the man's great theories on the eternal light and the great finality, of course this makes those who care about one antsy about the ultimate tragedy of my soul burning on a spit. So I was thinking of how I found two songs that filled my mind with images of places I have been and people I have known and things I have done in the honky tonks, country boogies and watermelon feeds of my life. In places with names like The Bar Ditch, or The High Horse Tavern, or Eskimo Joe or Cains Ballroom or the Diamond Ballroom, or Lake Dirty Bird, or Winfield, or Atoka or Eureka Springs or any of a million places by the road. I thought of all that mess and realized that these two songs (one with an amazing collection of those who played out there lives on stages just a few feet away while I was drinking too much, getting way too stoned and trying to get layed out in the parking lot), that these two songs express my alternate view of the ultimate reality better than all the stupid words that pour out of me for no apparant reason whatsoever!

The very first picture is what the place looked like when I lived there and the very last picture looks like it was taken from the front porch where I lived for a year (that old house was long since torn down). It is odd that the two Presidents that have mentioned it are the Bush's since it was one of the last bastions of non conformist expressionism heading into the Reagen years when I lived there. The building was a turn of the century stone structure that had been a store of some sort with living quarters upstairs. When the bar opended they hung plywood diagonally witht eh women getting the toilet and the men getting the tube. Very Chic, don't you think. I remember when they had 10 cent beer night if you wore your pajama's in and we were all dancing to Cinnamon Girl and Revolution and then they would play Byron Berline and Sundance or Mississippi John Hurt. Oddly eclectic place way back when!

it is funny you should mention the pajama thing, because in one of the towns i grew up (i am not sure how long they have been doing this but) tommorow morning they will be having their annual pajama party offering savings to those in there nighties (no sweats!)
it is one thing to see the place now...but another thing to have been there back when we were kids. earlier somewhere i mentioned that i showed up at a class reunion...i really never imagined that i would go, but i showed up in my street clothes, wearing my backpack (probably had dork written all over me) and it was a lot of fun! i am amazed at how many of us remembered each other...anyway, this one guy i recognized hadn't seen in awhile he was just crazy and a tad ornery at times but i think of him as one of the good ones (i remember once offering him a stick of gum and he is like, "nah, it's bad for your teeth" then he pops the dental crown off right in front showing off a stub...and of course we both crack up) (...and his brother once...he had this big wad of something in his mouth he was working on and i am looking and so i ask, "is that gum?" and he is like, "nah, gum is bad for your teeth." and proceeds to spit a huge wad of black goo out onto the ground. 'course that got a grin going on my face...)
but anyway, what i started to say was with the first guy we were talking about the old place and how when you try to explain it to people who are only familiar with it now, they don't quite understand...or something?

I have said before that I have been listening to the works of Roky and the Elevators and the Aliens etc for years (they toured Texas and Oklahoma with the Jefferson Airplane once along time ago oddly enough) and have always found it interesting and thought provoking. Perhaps it is my own insanity genes or even a connection through locale or God Knows? I have seen this documentary twice and it just contributes to the Legend of course. So, if you have crazy genes you may find it interesting!

i do remember you posting a little about him along with a link to an article which explained a little about his situation and how he'd fairly recently gave his first live performance after a long time of not performing and i became interested in hearing his story and so i do actually own the dvd. (i knew of no other way i could watch it)

I have seen what is loosely labeled schizophrenia first hand all my life and it is an interesting brain phenomena and it does result in some interesting random acts of creativity. I wonder if that is why it is so easy for me to interpret religion as just mass schizophrenia.I don't know?

I have watched it on the Sundance channel. That channel has some intersting films and things (including Elvis Costello's Spectacle)!

They had a good song out but I forget the name of it. I think a guy in it is playing a jug. I saw a bw video of it on You tube once I think...
