So you believe in larger government with more intrusive power over people's individual decisions, yes?

They don't care for Republicans. As a conservative, I do think free rides should be given to those who are disabled or poor or have chronic illnesses. That probably makes me a little different than alot of my fellow Republicans...

Draz, I'm sorry if nastiness was perceived. It was not intended. Sometimes I can be too direct, and shouldn't be with someone I don't yet know well. I hope you stick around and that becomes untrue (that we don't know each other well.)

And Cheryl, we don't hate Republicans. We love you and Dave, and the others here of the conservative persuasions. Just yesterday I was bragging about how on Arlonet, unlike just about anywhere else, we can argue a point heatedly but still love each other.

Fair enough Ceashel.

There's one thing I expect to find on adg's site that is absent elsewhere... That would be a tolerance for diverse thoughts and opinions without having the "that's ignorant" card played. You've proven my expectations to be true... Thank you.

Cheryl... I feel the same way... That's the fine line I referred to earlier... We just need to remember to teach them (those that are able) to fish as well.

What?

That's what benefits with strings attached are. There are degrees of the requirements but if you provide health care, for example, with preconditions such as employment, restrictions on life style, limits to the prescription or treatment types, and so on, you have added more controls, more bureaucracy, in fact, more powerful government.

Single payer systems in which everyone is covered equally are both the fairest and least intrusive solution. Where this is a challenge as shown in California is the problem of illegals who have to be covered. California is staggering under the challenges of illegal immigrants, high costs of civil service and propositions that keep property taxes abnormally low for the market value of the properties.

I don't equate government restrictions with incentive to better oneself.

Didn't mean that ya'll hated regular Republicans like Dave & I. I meant Republicans like Dubya, Newt, McCain, Palin etc. And on here I think folks agreeably disagree and have some interesting discussions... :)

We already have single payer stuff in the USA - all the police and firefighters, the entire military, all public school employees, everyone on medicaid and medicare, everyone on social security - all these are your run of the mill socialist US institutions. Anyone complaining about where the US is going in terms of socialism, hasn't noticed where we've been. Anyone benefitting from any of these institutions and showing up bitching and moaning about the way its going is being hypocritical. The only question I have is whether or not healthcare should be expected for all Americans, like we expect police and firefighters, postal services, etc. Imagine if police and firefighters had all been private corporate institutions where whoever could afford it got those services (it used to be that way). There are some who would like to return to the days when all of these things were in private hands... I am, for sure not one of them. I think we ought to extend the same protections and services with regard to healthcare... :)

Can I get an Amen to what ADG said? It's amazing to me that almost all of my "old white men" friends are getting their health care through the VA or Medicare and are collecting Social Security or government/military pensions, yet are almost to the man dead set against this country "creeping towards Socialism." I'm not saying they don't deserve their benefits, but I'm just saying wake up and smell the Folger's!

The debate about health care being a right is a debate over values. It is an important point.

The debate not being had is health care as a good investment. Any businessman from the smallest to largest knows that health is the largest contributor to productivity. From a strict investment perspective, it is the best thing to do with the money. From an objectivist point of view, it is the selfish thing to do. 8)

Just to make it clear... I wasn't necessarily referring to health care when I brought up the "hand out" issue. I'm talking more along the lines of the welfare system... When you start getting 2nd and 3rd generation chronic welfare recipients, I'm gonna hafta say the machine is broken.
