I agree Len, that the nuclear aspect of this is the key to the whole matter. This is a dangerous and difficult situation. It's the domino effect. But I believe that the risks of withdrawing must outweigh the risks of staying in, or this president wouldn't have made that decision. Of course, he is damned if he does, damned if he doesn't really.

I sense that this was extremely difficult for Obama personally. It comes through in his demeanor. As a caring person, which I believe that he is, it has to be excruciating to be in this position. To be responsible for all of those hundreds of thousands of lives. It's painful to think about and you can see that it's not a decision he made lightly.

I will also say this about Robert Gates. Despite his political history, he is a highly intelligent and seemingly decent person. I have met him and heard him speak to kids on the subject of science and he is really very impressive. He is NOTHING like Rummy. I believe that he does truly care about the well being of the troops. And unlike his predecessor, I believe his preference would be to NOT be at war.

Just my 2 cents.

@hrg: Agreed. Better this team then the last one.

Meanwhile, waiting for kickoff at the Georgia Dome. The world's worries have to wait sometimes.

Am I remembering this correctly: didn't Mr. Obama say he was going to withdraw troops from Iraq starting in Jan. 2010? It sticks in my memory that he did, but I'm not certain about that.

Another thing I find curious, after months of nothing but Iraq in the news it has dropped from view in the media seemingly. Am I missing something? (Knowing me I am)

And another thing: You've all probably heard someone at sometime say "You scared me half to death" when they were startled. I was wondering - if someone comes up 5 minutes later and scares that same person half to death again is that person then "all" dead? (Either thinking too much or not clearly enough.)

Wait a minute, I just thought about it and the person would then be only 3/4 dead since they were already half dead from the first instance. They would never become completely dead, but just barely alive if the process were to continue. What a deal! :)

A very well reported article by Peter Baker of the NY Times on the President's decision making process.

Well, you're born spiritually dead and physically alive. If you get scared half to death enough times I'm just not sure. Maybe I'm only 1/512th alive by now.

Just remembered I'm not supposed to be silly here as there is a time and a place and this portion of the forums isn't it for at least one of those items. I do apologize for that.
