Good grief. What is going on?

http://www.scstatehouse.gov/code/t23c029.htm

Every member of a subversive organization... every person who advocates, teaches, advises or practices the duty, necessity or propriety of controlling, conducting, seizing or overthrowing the government of the United States, of this State or of any political subdivision thereof by force or violence or other unlawful means, who resides, transacts any business or attempts to influence political action in this State, shall register with the Secretary of State on the forms and at the times prescribed by him.

Any organization or person who violates any of the provisions of this chapter shall, upon conviction thereof, be punished by a fine of not more than twenty-five thousand dollars or imprisonment for not more than ten years, or by both fine and imprisonment.

What are "other unlawful means"?

I don't think I like this. Sure would like to hear from some sane people about it.

I would think this is broad "anti-terrorism" language, and probably not a major problem for people and groups who exercise their rights of free speech and assembly "within the law". Always on the lookout, however, for those who would try to read more into something like this to curtail civil liberties.

Isn't South Carolina the state that wanted to keep the Confederate flag (or some resemblance to it) as their state flag? Can you say issues?

 Me too!!! Please let me know if you find any.......But anyway, while I'm here, I don't like it either. The language alone is scary. Makes me feel like I all of a sudden need a shower......

Sounds like treason to me...I don't think they'll have many takers to register for that.

I'm wondering - what kind of things could run afoul of this "law"? What is unlawful activity that could land you in jail for a long time or with a hefty fine, up to 10 years (or long enough to shut you up) and what, $25,000. Um - anarchist shantytowns? IMF protests? um... sit-ins in a university building? states rights advocacy? refusal to pay income tax? advocating that others not pay taxes? alternative currencies? um... it seems it could be a pretty endless list, and subject to the whims of whoever's interpreting other "law."

What's violent? We did have a D.C. police officer get out and pull a gun when his Hummer got snowballed.

A hummer vs. a snowball.....? Sounds like reasonable use of deadly force to me. Now, if the snowball had been black..........
