When A Soldier Makes It Home
words and music by Arlo Guthrie

Code:
From: Arlo Guthrie

Capoed up on the 2nd fret. I left out the
suspensions etc... It's more or less like this:

C                  Em
Halfway around the world tonight

     F           G       C
In a strange and foreign land

  Am                Em
A soldier packs his memories

      F             G
As he leaves Afghanistan

    Am                   Em
And back home they don't know too much

        F              G
There's just no way to tell

  C                Em
I guess you had to be there

       F                 G
For to know that war was hell

Chorus:

        F           Am       F
And there won't be any victory parades

    C                   F
For those that's coming back

        Am             Em
They'll fly them in at midnight

      F             G
And unload the body sacks

         Am            Em
And the living will be walking down

  F               G
A long and lonely road

        C               Em
Because nobody seems to care these days

       F       G        C
When a soldier makes it home

This may help.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ylaPz6qFp7I

This YouTube of When A Soldier Makes It Home is solo acoustic and shot more or less straight on so it's easier to see Arlo's left hand. This video is also close captioned so you can sing along with Arlo while practicing.

This isn't a very hard song chordally, he does use a capo. The song is sung in D and he is capo'd at the second fret using open C key forms. To get the feel of it, it is important to pay attention to the right hand rhythm chops. He's playing a definite pattern that gives the song it's drive and vocal phrasing.

This is one his best songs telling the story and making medicine of music for a long lasting harsh wound in my generation. Some vets who sent me messages about the video appreciated it. Some of us who didn't have to go but had brothers who did do.

Thanks Arlo!

Amazing to me that the folkslinger wrote a song about Russian soldiers in Afghanistan decades ago that has become almost an anthem for OUR soldiers who (mostly) came home from Nam, Iraq, and Afghanistan. Was he prescient about us having to go to war over there?

Dunno Mikey. He said it was "not only overdue but already outdated" when as it turns out, it remains current. IMO, that is a true folk song. The videos get a LOT of downloads and the rate lately is increasing not as in a short burst viral but a steady accelerating chug up hill. Someone is going to cover it and have a massive hit. I hope it's Arlo.

Wars change, but war doesn't.

Arlo has posted this for the guitar, and it works for keyboard too. Don't know about the "harp.":

I use a Marine Band key of "D", don't know about tabs, they just confuse me, pop in the CD and play along. There's a few songs you can use a "D", Sailing Down My Golden River, When the Ship Comes In, "F" on Amazing Grace, I use an "A" on a few and an "E" on a few.
