1. (So) [C] When I leave this old world, my work is all [F] done,
Do not be [C] saddened, for [D] this we have [G] come:
To work in the [C] orchard, to harvest the [F] fruit,
To feed those who [C] hunger [D] and [G] nourish the [C] truth.

2. [Em] Lord, hear my [Am] prayer [G] and give us this [C] day,
(And) [F] Lessen the [C] burdens [D] that stand in the [G] way,
And [Em] open the [Am] heavens [G] and come like a [C] dove,
That [F] flies on com-[C]-passion, [D] for-[G]-giveness and [C] love.

3. [C] Can you dry every tear and bind every [F] wound
And take every [C] hand that [D] death has con-[G]-sumed?
And tear down these [C] walls that burden each [F] heart,
For gone is the [C] distance [D] that [G] keeps us a-[C]-part.

4. [Em] Join every [Am] hand, [G] sing a new [C] song,
The [F] old world is [C] dying [D] and the new day is [G] born.
For [Em] gone is the [Am] night, [G] so let us re-[C]-joice,
And [F] witness the [C] light [D] and [G] lift every [C] voice.

Repeat 1 & 2, including the words in parentheses.

I just saw Arlo in Reno & he sang what he called a "Hymn." It included the lines: "...compassion, forgiveness, & love." Does anyone have a recording/lyrics/chords for Arlo's Hymn? I'm only a chord guy but I am an ordained minister & have done this with "My Peace" & "In Times Like These" & taught these songs to the 2 small, rural churches I serve. I would like to do the same with Arlo's "Hymn" & will post my results when I figure it out. Thanks for your help.

If you want to listen to "The Hymn" go to prairiehome.publicradio.org/programs/2009/04/25 & click on Segment 5. I've written down the lyrics & will start trying to chord it out now

I love Arlo's Hymn. After Mike passed he dedicated it to him at Hampton and it means the world to me...

Okay - It's like this: In my typical notation, each chord is a beat (this is in 3/4 so each grouping is a measure) and each slash is a beat - the same as the chord proceeding it. There's walk ups etc. not included but they are fairly obvious...

G// C// /// F// /// C// D// G//
G// C// /// F// /// C// G// C//

E// Am// G// C// F// C// D// G//
E// Am// G// C// F// C// G// C//

Thanks for posting that. That could easily be converted to piano. I will have to try that when I get home from the beach.
