from a distance....

i guess it is what it is

when i say from a distance
i mean how one perceives
or stereotypes
like "oh, he is a Dead Head"
what image does that conjure
in the mind's eye

i suppose that could be a rhetorical question (?) ,
or maybe not, but it does remind me of a story...sometime in the 80s i think? i was over walking around in the merchants district in my neighborhood, and was approached by someone who launched into a conversation at the middle of the conversation. i mean something like, "he is still in the hospital, and they say it is still serious!" i didn't know her, but she said it like i most certainly know what she is talking about. so i am like, "oh! what is this now?" and she expresses again the seriousness and as if i know exactly where she is coming from, so i am like, "who is this now?" she is almost aghast and says, "jerry!" and i am still a bit out of context and i am searching my mind, who do i know around here by the name of jerry? and i say something like, "i am not sure that i know him." and she is like, "aren't you a dead head?!" and i am like, "well i do enjoy some of their music, but i....what?" (by then i put it together that she was referring to jerry garcia of course, and that i hadn't yet heard this news) and then she is like, "you are a poser!" and i am like, "what???" i examined my appearance and i do remember i did have on a tie dyed t-shirt i'd gotten from a local artist which i thought was really awesome that had a tie dyed star with really cool colors and trails like a shooting star, not like a sideways shooting star, but like one that was coming straight at you,,, if you were in like outer space or something.... anyway, i just went back to talking about jerry, expressing my genuine concern.
i did think that was an interesting encounter.

The way you looked made the woman assume things about you. Might be true might not! All from a distance.
As an individual, you could "take a stand" on Jerry and the Dead.

i wanted to get back to this:
"As an individual, you could "take a stand" on Jerry and the Dead."

i thought that was an interesting statement. i really liked it. i am not sure how fully this appreciates that statement and its meanings though, but anyway, while i wouldn't call myself an expert on jerry, or the dead, i did get it into my head at that time to get an address, by now i am not sure how....maybe a music magazine? did they have stuff in the back of them like, fans can send mail HERE (for this band or that band) ? anyhow, i got an address somehow and sent a brief message on a card, (i wish i could remember the card but i don't), that would somehow convey, i heard that jerry wasn't feeling well,,,,feel better soon, and things like that....not that he wasn't getting a gazillion messages already. shortly after that i began receiving a newsletter from them which kind of surprised me (i didn't expect to hear a thing)....so i guess they got the card! yay!

i really should be watering the garden before the sun gets hot
but i was messin with the guitar and started picking this song
I wanted to listen to a version to get some ideas on where the fingers might go
if they were to wander around a bit
so this happened and i found this

I never said nothing about the "misunderstood" but I was reading this book by Marcus Borg. Marcus is a christian who presents his religion in a more rational manner than most of his fellow believers. So I was reading through and agreeing with many of the things says until he got to the cosmic communication with the almighty. He calls it experiencing god. He goes through a list of names like William James and Abraham Heschel and Abraham Maslow talking about "peak experiences" and Rudolf Otto and "experiences of the numinous". Of course, Huston Smith and the "virtual human unanimity". Then he talks of saints and roads to Damascus and meditations in the deserts or the mountains. Jacob and fiery ladders and Moses and burning bushes and all sorts visions and spectacles. He ends up with old Job saying, "I had heard of you by the hearing of the ear, but now my eyes see you".

This is followed by a plea that we must take these things seriously.

another one i was looking for finger ideas on

marcus borg....he was editor of that book i got (rather rebellious of me, huh) that compared sayings of jesus and buddha that i was talking about around here earlier, the one i got sometime ago and practically forgot about. anyway, i think i was saying how it looked like a striving for something healthier for humans as a whole than what was happening at the time. but when it turns all ("i am the way " and "i am the holy one" too!) i am like, oh....

(ironically ?) it is funny too how i was thinking the other day comparing social darwinism in my mind with oppressive society that is backed by religion (legitimized judge and jury) ?

So he is talking about the mysterium tremendum fascinans then he throws in the line "though some people regard such experiences as illusory or delusional rather than as disclosures of something real". Now of course that is directed right at me being an atheist and all. That is the only statement concerning an atheist point in the whole text. My issue is not with the stereotyping that casts upon all atheists as I do believe people who believe in god are delusional and I would suppose that is stereotyping of my own and as the song says I fear I will become my own enemy in the moment that I preach. However, I do not believe all people who believe in god follow the same form of delusional philosophy.

I mean, what do you think of a line like that completely from the blue?

(always liked that song)

well i am not familiar with the book, but....for whatever shifts in perception there might be, and regarding this line, "though some people regard such experiences as illusory or delusional rather than as disclosures of something real", maybe he felt obligated in a sense to acknowledge at least someplace that not everyone sees it the way he is explaining it? (he may have been recalling a conversation or two?)

as far as dreams go....i think that dreams are dreams are dreams. i don't see them as a delusional thing or illusory exactly....they are dreams, though i do think they can be fantastic ("i'm flying!"). and i think also there is a lot of processing of thoughts and emotions that can go on in dreams? sometimes i am amused by them because i don't know what kind of sense they make?

Trying to hard to escape it
What is wrong with reality anyway?

well of course realities can be harsh....

but, a kind of an offshoot thought here i guess....something i heard recently, attributed to einstein, "if you want your children to be intelligent, read them fairy tales. if you want them to be more intelligent, read them more fairy tales."

i suppose fiction (or, fantasy?) can be an interesting approach to reality ?
