I remember lots of early Fall days, sitting in class watching the guys try not to yell or react overmuch to the World Series games coming in over their transistor radios with the "unobtrusive" earpieces trailing from their shirt pockets.

One Spring, I convinced a friend of mine to ditch school and go to the Indians' home opener. She hated baseball, but went because we were friends. Well, the game was one of the longest on record, went about 17 innings if I remember. She didn't talk to me for awhile after that!! <img src="http://www.arlo.net/ubb/smilies/smile.gif" width=15 height=15>

"Pittsfield is baseball's birthplace until further notice. We know that baseball was like a field of dandelions in the late 1790's and early 1800's......
it was growing everywhere."

Baseball historian John Thorn's comment after Pittsfield, Mass, city officials authenticated a 1791 ordinance, found in Pittsfield library vault, that prohibited anyone from playing baseball within 80 yards of the new meeting house. That's 48 years before Abner Doubleday supposedly invented the modern game in Cooperstown, N.Y.

Peter Golenbock's oral history of the Cubs, Wrigleyville, put to rest the idea that Abner Doubleday invented baseball. Apparently some overly-zealous patriotic types thought it would be a cool idea if a Civil War general was credited with inventing America's Great Game, & so the propaganda was spread until folks heard it enough that they believed it.

A lot has changed since then, huh?

We've been hearing the coverage of the steroids stuff on our thinking persons radio station....all the "nopes" and "i dunno's" and "are you taking the 5th?"

There's lotsa folks here who would take a fifth any time it was offered, I'm sure...

I knew these hearings would be kinda bland, with players whispering to their lawyers & reciting whatever they were told to say, unlike the Stengel 1958 testimony, when the world was a lot different.

The guy who comes out of all this looking bad, of course, is Big Mac. He might as well have just said that he used steroids. His reasons for taking the fifth make no sense. He wanted to protect his family? Nobody said they were on steroids. He's not there to talk about the past? Well, why does he think he's there---to testify as to the future??

And, of course, it's all a bunch of grandstanding to get some Congressmen's faces on TV. They coulda inevstigated football---hell, half of the guys you see on any given NFL game are on the stuff---but despite the NFL's popularity, baseball's stars are still the most recognizable, so Congress picked on baseball first.

I hereby dedicate my 500th post as P. Pittsburgh Joe to the memory of Cy Young, the only 500-game winner in Major League history.

How about those Mets!? They spent the winter making moves to return to their glory days. Instead they've gone back to 1964, with their worst start since Casey Stengel was manager the year Shea Stadium opened.
