Hey Arnie I was thinking about going to Cheryls for cake too,but then i remembered mean nasty guys like me cant cross the border,,you know the one between Canada and the U.S.A,,I have been trying to figure out what to do about Cheryls Birthday since I saw this thread posted this morning,,I was going e mail her then I thought what if she is on the road??using the laptop,,,,you know the one thats old and doesn,t allow her to post or check e mails....

Thanks for the birthday wishes ya'll. I had a good day & went out to eat with my folks & Mike. No cake tho. Got some ncie presents too! Fortunately I can post on this 486 laptop & do e-mails, it's just slow LOL! Tommorow we go on back home from Nags Head. Even tho they don't get TVLAND here (Crummy cable system LOL), it's still gonna be hard adjusting to going back to no cable tv. One of the perks of country living LOL! I got spoiled watching the real Star Trek (60's one), Dark Shadows, Cosby Show, Combat, Perry Mason, Archie Bunker, & some other good old 60's & 70's shows.

Okay, okay. So I'm a provincial midwesterner--what the hell is poutine?

POUTINE
Poutine is a French-Canadian "dish" that resembles American Gravy Cheese Fries, but is actually different in many respects. While poutine is readily available across Canada, you just can't get a perfect tasting poutine unless you are in the province of Quebec.

The French Fries
The fries must be hand-cut and very fresh. Fast-food-type fries will not taste as good. Also, you must fry the potatoes in lard. Vegetable oil and other politically-correct oils spoil the taste.

The Gravy
French-Canadian gravy (also known as BBQ Chicken Gravy) is very different than American gravy. First of all, it is very dark and thick, almost like molasses. Secondly, it has a very flavorful taste which I cannot describe...very much like pepper and vinegar and other magical ingredients, but without a tomato base like many of its American counterparts. If you can stand a spoon straight up in it, it's good. Make sure it's hot!

The Cheese
The cheese is the most important part. You must use FRESH white, cheddar cheese curds. These curds have a taste and texture very different than cheddar cheese that you are used to eating. The cheese curds will actually squeak in your teeth as you eat them. While curds are available in most Canadian supermarkets, I have not found them in many American markets (the closest thing in taste I can find is Mozzarella String Cheese). When the curds are placed on the fries and the hot gravy is poured on top, the three flavors combine to produce what can only be described as the best junk food taste sensation on earth.
