Yes, the street was in Commerce. There's a nice picture of the Mick standing by the street sign in the book A Hero All His Life, written by Mick's widow & sons.

Is it true that all the big teams in your town use the same colors?

Yes, it's true. The Steelers' colors have always been black & gold, the Pirates have been black & gold since, I believe, the late '40's (they had been red & blue previously), & the Penguins have been black & gold since the early '80's (they'd been blue & white previously). For folks around here that like to dress in their teams' colors, it sure makes for an inexpensive wardrobe. Another reason why Pittsburgh, really, is the only place to live.

Thank you for the good wishes, ladies! Cyndy & Cheryl, understand your men---remember, if they're home watching baseball, at least you know where they are! Anyways, here's a report on the event:

The annual event at the Forbes Field Wall was, as always, a great time. I arrived at about 11:00, 2 hours before the scheduled time, to talk to the early arrivals. There were 4 firemen there waiting for the event to start. The fire engine was parked in a no parking zone, surrounded by cones. Only in Pittsburgh.

After about an hour, I was approached by some film students who asked me whether I was Mr. Baseball. I was taken aback, but naturally I said, yes, I was. To make a long story short, I ended up narrating a documentary on Forbes Field, one that probably won't air anywhere. Had I known this was gonna happen, I woulda shaved. Well, OK, probably not. Anyways, I looked into the camera & took them on a tour of what remains of the wall, & told them everything I could think of about Forbes Field. I found that I narrate documentaries just like I post on the internet. I feel sorry for anybody who watches it & tries to follow my narration.

Of course, I grabbed my traditional 10/13 lunch with the Hot Dog Man. As always, he grilled my dog not 1 second too long & put the exact right amount of mustard & relish on it. It's always great to visit with him. He's a legitimate Pittsburgh Character.

No former Pirates could make it today, but we had original members of the Benny Benack Band performing before the game broadcast---the same band that played "Beat 'Em Bucs" at Forbes Field back in the day.

It didn't look like we'd have much a crowd at first, but soon it swelled to about 200 people. The weather forecast was for rain, but we've never had a rainy day in the long history of this event. At one point, a few drops fell, then stopped. A fan yelled, "God is a Pirate fan!" Everybody laughed. Later, when I got home (about 2 miles away), I saw that it had rained here. Maybe God is a Pirate fan after all.

Somebody pointed out the irony of there being a presidential debate that night. The famous Kennedy/Nixon debate occurred on 10/13/60. I learned about it in school, but don't know one person who watched it. The biggest party in the history of the world was going on in Pittsburgh.

As always, I did a lot of socializing during the beginning of the broadcast (great to see the guys again) as did others, but by the 8th inning, everybody crowds around the tape player & it gets quiet (cept for the broadcast), as everybody anticipates all of the key events---the grounder that hits Tony Kubek in the adam's apple, Jim Coates forgetting to cover 1B, the Hal Smith homer, the famous "Mantle play" at 1B, & finally, Maz's big homer---cheering & booing at appropriate times. Cameras for several news stations were there. If I was on TV, I didn't get a chance to watch. No big deal.

Soon I headed home to get ready to go to the Mindy Smith/Garrison Starr concert.

Sure hope the concert tonight is as much fun as the DAY was!
