Number one: to my 86-year-old grandma. She's been in the hospital for nearly two weeks--and they still can't figure out what's wrong. A big part of the problem is that they gave her heparin for a stroke when she should have just been treated for a kidney infection. She developed a rare side effect that caused her platelet count to drop to zero twice. Every time (about 3 times now) that it seems as though she's on the mend and will be able to come home, she's had a relapse. She was supposed to come home yesterday, but when my aunt went to the hospital on Monday, she was on a heart monitor, had an iv, was catheterized, and could barely move. My mom and aunt were called up to the hospital last night around 10 because of more complications--white blood cell count through the roof. Again, they can't find the cause. They truly thought that they'd get a call in the early morning hours that she'd slipped away. But when I went up to visit this morning she'd had breakfast, was awake and lucid, and ready to visit. She's anxious to get home and finish her crocheting for the latest great-great grandchild (16 grandkids, 24 great-grandkids and several great-greats).

Number 2: A friend and coworker, Vivian de la Cruz and her family. Vivian, 38, had a stroke a few years ago while on the operating table. As if this wasn't tough enough to recover from, she recently had trouble swallowing. They discovered a huge tumor on her throat. Further tests then showed 7 tumors altogether--and proved to be cancerous. She goes in for surgery on the 17th to have both lymph glands (nodes??) removed. The surgeon is afraid she'll have a cardiac arrest on the operating table since she's so frail. On top of all this, her dad came to visit her a couple weeks ago. He had a heart attack on the way up from Miami. He checked himself out of the hospital AMA (ala Todd), and drove on up. He didn't want Vivian to know any of this, so instead of just going to a hospital here, he went back to Miami--where he had another heart attack. He's better now and plans on flying back up to be with her. Vivian's sister, Elsa, also works with us. She's about to go ga-ga dealing with all this.

Sorry for the novel, but just kinda felt the need to unload. I feel so bad for Grandma--and want her home where she's comfortable. And poor Vivian--she's trying to prepare for the worst, but her mother and sister can hardly tolerate the thought. I feel for them all.

Thanks to you all. Grandma is coming home Wednesday--and is thrilled. She's looking great!

Vivian had a very rough time after surgery and it was touch and go. Then, to everyone's amazement, just SURGED with health. And, the best news of all, the Drs told her she did NOT have cancer after all--the tumors were benign. (Had to be the blundervibes, doncha' think?) Even her voice is fine (Drs were predicting vocal chord damage). She is even planning on returning to work soon. ANOTHER totally thrilled person.

What a wonderful group of people you all are.
