Bob's back in the hospital. Apparently very diabetic. He'd had some blood sugar issues after his problems in late 2002, but it had seemed to settle down. Now, after a double dose of winter infections it came back with a vengence. He's in ICU, but not critical. He just needs testing every hour for a while until he's stabilized. Then the kidney guy gets to do tests to make sure that his remaining kidney is healthy. So, some of those vibes would be real welcome.

I know what you're going thru as Mike was dx'ed with diabetes in 1994 & I in 1998. Fortunately Mike didn't have to go in the hospital but we were up visiting his sister in Ohio at the time & the drs wouldn't let him come back home until he was okay enough to go back home so a weeks trip became a 6 months trip. How they found out he had it was his vision was getting really bad & he was having trouble seeing so when we were visiting his sister he had her take him to her eye dr. That's when they found out he had diabetes & it had gotten in his eyes causing him to have diabetic retinopathy making him legally blind.

How they found out I was diabetic was yrs ago in the 80's a dr said I was borderline diabetic. I went & quit sugars thinking I could be diabetic but after awhile couldn't take it anymore & went back to eating sweets. They now say if they say you're borderline, you're not, you're actually diabetic. After Mike got dx'ed I decided to go to blood sugar checks to see if I had it or not whenever they had free blood sugar checks. At a free blood sugar check I went to, that's when they found out I was diabetic. So I went to Mikes dr to see if I was & sho nuff I was. Had the drs definately diagnosed me yrs ago & had me on meds I would be in better shape today than I am. Learning how to take care of Mike helped prepare me for when I got it.

It's not easy not being able to eat certain foods & having to check your sugars alot & watch yourself & then you have to worry about low blood sugars etc. So I know what he is up against. Thankfully at my last eye check my eyes are okay. I do worry about the kidneys as I used to have kidney trouble yrs ago but so far my kidneys are okay. But the diabetes settled in my feet causing me to have neuropathy in my feet. I would urge folks to get tested for diabetes because if you do have it, then if it is caught early there are less chances for complications. I would hate for anyone to have to go thru what we are going thru...

Pat, I'm so sorry. I know all too well (although not first-hand) what diabetes can do.

In my medical class we're learning that being overweight plays a roll at the cellular level. If there are any overweight diabetics out there, the hardest thing to do is lose weight while watching carb and sugar intakes. It's a catch-22 situation. But, until the weight comes off, the diabetes can't be controlled as easily.

Strangeley, noone in my mother's family was ever overweight... and they were all diabetics. At 116 pounds, my mother was told to lose weight!

Thank, everyone. I'll let Bob know. They're probably going to put him in a regular room tonight or tomorrow. His blood sugar had reached the high 900's, which is kind of unbelievable, but not if you saw him the last few days. It's way down from there already. He does have neuropathy, Cheryl. Blurred vision, too, but that should get better. He's going to have to do the insulin injections, according to the doctor, but so far he's taking all this kind of well.

Wow, 900. More pryers jsut said. When Mike was diagnosed he was 400 & when I was diagnosed I was 151. Thanksfully I'm only on the pill but Mike is on insulin si we can fell for him. Get well soon...
