OK, here's what Bush has to do over the next four years:

1. Get us out of Iraq, and cease and desist warmongering.

2. Get us back in the world community, in which we were once a respected super-power and leader of the free world.

3. Stop the economic bloodletting of the working people in favor of the empty corporate suits that run America, Inc.

4. Stop allowing those same corporate types to wantonly rape the environment in the name of lust for money.

5. Somehow bring the nation together so this schism between "red" and "blue" states is no more.

I doubt that he can do any of the above; if he fails, look for a backlash in 2008 that could last 20 years for the other side, a la 1932-1952.

I suppose what's next is trying to pull this country together again... Most important of all will be to make sure that the administration remembers that they do NOT have a "MANDATE" to do what they please. Nearly half the country voted against them. We have to keep active, letting them know that their policies have not reflected the true views of the people. Moderation of their policies will do much to bring this nation back together, and bring us back into balance with the world community.

We tried. This so, so sucks. It kind of put my mother in the hospital. She's home and should be OK, but she was so upset she took a pill she shouldn't have taken with her other meds, because she thought it would help her sleep. It sure did. She's been out of it since then. Every time she wakes up she asks if things have changed and if Kerry's winning now. Last time she started telling us about going to be thinking Dewey had one and waking up to find it was Truman. She's too fuzzy to explain exactly what happened.

So, we have four more years with essentially no representation at the federal level. I'm pretty sick myself.

mikey, i think you make a very valid point and i hope you're right. seems everytime this country swings too far one way, we have a backlash, but i'm more than a little concerned about the long term effects of this swing to the right. bush certainly has the opportunity to pack the courts, specifically the supreme court and that would be felt long after he's gone. i'm worried about the long term effects to the environment, another thing you can't just fix 4 years from now.

as bad as bush was the last 4 years, i can't imagine how much worse he could be now that he's not going to be concerned about reelection and when he probably feels he has a true mandate this time, because he won the popular vote. i'll never understand how people continually vote against their own best interests.

pat...my thoughts are with your mom. i hope she loses the effect of the meds soon, although coming back to reality isn't such a good idea either. i'm feeling pretty sick. too...

Excellent points, all. Was up most of the night and am really tired right now. I did try to get some sleep, but it was impossible--kept waiting to see which way Michigan would fall--squeaked by for Kerry, but was too little, too late.

I'm having more trouble getting my mind around the fact that Bush won the popular vote. How can that be? I know we've talked about the dumbing down of America, but I really didn't think we'd dumbed down that much. This is a very sad day for our country. We have seen how very much destruction can be wrought in 4 short years ... and now we have 4 more years to see how much more damage he can do.

Sigh.

It's 5 am Thurs morn here and I have to go to work and get teased (by a few people, yea Chel it will take me back to when I was 16 and marched in the anti nam rallies here. It was a police state here then and still very small minded)So now you have Dubya and we have his mini me who holds both levels of our Senate, has a new Senator in the house
for a new party,Family First (read Evangalistic Party).And their bringing up things like"the abortion debate" (there wasn't one)which they did not reveal before the election.How many of our rights will be eroded, how many more people will die in Iraq, as a woman I am terrified.
Some positive things are that he can never run again, for me, my home state wanted Kerry, but I had no doubt about that, and there will be a backlash in 4 years.
Well fire and brimstone scared half the population of my two countries into making us more hated in the world.
