I am afraid that Nathan is much too right. The opposition has won. We have a clear reduction in our freedoms, the result of over-reaction by the Bush administration and friends. Just wait until he starts another war with Iraq. Less freedom to speak and act. Looks like LBJ all over again (for those of us old enough to remember.)

Oh I think it is much worse then that, The 60's could not happen in the present day, there would be internment camps all over the country, our telephones would be monitored, our freedom of expression lost in the name of God and country, no we had so many more freedoms then, just think of the comparison of Bobby Kennedy to John Ashcroft and one can clearly see that the times have changed and not for the betterment for the American people. I stand on the hilltop and cry out to all, tis better to die at the hands of a terroist then to rot away in some prison without the benifit of judge or jury.

LET FREEDOM RING, Let our nation be something worth fighting for, someting to be proud of, and with the grace of God, The Land of the FREE.

The really scary thing is the more than apparant abuse of power that seems to be taking place with this new pro-active policy. As the worlds only existing "superpower", it is more incumbant upon us now than ever to use our power in a responsible fashion. To act upon real clear and present threats is one thing, to act on perceived threats is another. The fact that these decisions that could trigger Armegeddon are being made by a man who was more than willing to execute retarded inmates in Texas and has clearly demonstrated a serious lack of intellect on a regular basis is more than a little disturbing. The shoot first and ask questions later policy may have worked for some, in their minds at least, in the old west, but it's not something best tried on a global basis in a world replete with nukes and other weapons of mass destruction.
Just what the world needs now, a stupid frat boy that can't hold his beer as the leader of the free world.

That's ok. We ARE talking about George W. Bush, so "dumb" is on theme. Don't beat yourself up for staying on theme, even if it's not the blunderite way!

I prefer Arlo's idea of Implements of destruction... didn't that include, like, shovels and rakes?

sorry, nate... no disrespect was meant to the main theme of this particular thread. It does merit thought and discussion on a more serious and respectful level than what I have frivolously offered so far. I was just givin' ya shit is all. Watching a special on tv 9/11/02 as some of the firemen recalled their personal experiences of that tragic and unforgettable day telling about their dads, brothers, and close friends who risked and ultimately lost their own lives in the line of duty to save whomever they could brought it home and all too real for somebody who wasn't there. It made me realize these guys were of the very elite when put to the test of heroic bravery. After seeing it all replayed one year later, it finally registered on my reality scale of just how REAL it all really was striking an emotional chord that I hadn't up until now felt. Their stories they told placed you in front row seats of that day of 9/11 which kinda had me feeling as if they were my dad and my brother that sacrificed their life to save somebody elses, and in a patriotic sense, they were my dad and brother. The firemen and all the other good courageous folks who performed so unselfishly brave and fearlessly on that day, I salute. As for my political views, see rbrown.

I went to a fight once, and a hockey game broke out!

Again, it all comes down basically to how we treat each other one on one. If enough people practice tolerance and respect on a personal level, the effects could be so far-reaching that our "leaders" would have no choice but to act in the same manner.

Imagine one person--just one saying "we're all in this together"

Now imagine two--what if fifty people, maybe fifty people a day said "we're all in this together!" Friends, they may think it's a movement!

I wish Bush would quit actively making it easier for the terrorists to recruit. It's like he's trying to make America more hated than we already are, and trying to drive away our allies. First they wanted war against Iraq because they may be developing weapons of mass destruction. That hasn't gone over so well, so now it's because they harbored al-Quaida. Both may be true, but the delivery is worthy of a six-year-old trying to explain how the lamp broke itself, and begs to be disbelieved. I just hope we make it to the next election.

The American people have shown, though, that we are strong and we can come together in the face of terrorism. A lot of govenment employees, despite inept "leadership," have done a lot to keep us safe. But our freedoms are under attack, and it worries me that so few people worry about that. I'm not usually a "joiner," but I joined the ACLU on Sept. 12, 2001. It seems important. Besides, my old FBI file was getting dusty.

What happened to the Bush that was supposed to be able to cross party lines and work with the other side?
Bush is not a leader, he just happens to be president. And if he is a leader in the minds of some, I fear that he may just be the head lemming.

Mr Bush does indeed cross party lines, he is taking away the freedoms of both Repu7lican and Democrats equally, the only area where he does have problems is crossing the line between the very rich and the average poor.
