Because religions are not that simple in practice and their practices are based on many writings, Agnes. It's simple, direct and obvious.

I'm not talking about God, Goofus. Just religion and churches.

And now back to watching McGuinn on TV perform a Pete Seeger song on a signature Rick with four soul singers dressed like The Temps as backup. Folk rock.... Turn Turn Turn.

Having spent some personal time with him, he wouldn't make all that bad a God......mostly because he recognizes his own imperfections, is extremely creative, and told me that his ultimate goal in [this] life is to become the best servant he can be. Honestly, this master of six strings believes that becoming a "good" servant is the highest purpose he can aspire to. Honestly.

I think that's what we need: a God made out of compassion, humility, gratitude and Blue rock & roll........

"Standing at the crossroads
Trying to read the signs
To tell me which way I should go
To find the answer
And all the time I know
Plant your love and let it grow" ~ Eric Clapton - "Let It Grow"

I really don't think EC is interested in being a god. You should at least choose somebody that wants to be a god? Maybe pick a spider or a great ape or something like that. Religion is only one contributor to the problems in the Middle East. I think sex and survival are on the list of contributors that keep people angry.

(of course these are fundamental control factors for religion....as every body knows god finds sex so icky he does not want to have anything to do with it (excepting maybe EC if he is your god?))

It won't make him a god but he's on his way to becoming a real human being.

That's the point.......we (human beings) are our own gods; we have ultimate control, not necessarily of our environment or circumstances, but of how we live our lives. Eric has taken control of his life after many years of excess, struggle, tragedy. Anyone can do it, if the will exists.

Just so, Kevin. Montini had a good observation that I can't quote exactly but it was something like this: when a man goes searching for the truth because he knows he hasn't found it, he has. Our certainties betray us. Our willingness to be uncertain but learning is knowledge itself.

Whether the action is one of religion, games, politics or art, we're hedonists at God's party. Even where I can't name the host, I can respect the house provided, the guests, and the entertainment. Respect goes a long way toward enlightenment. Should I meet the host, the only thing I'm reasonably sure of is I should express gratitude because nothing I can bring to the party isn't the host's to begin with. The best I can manage is to share it with the rest of the guests, to live in service of creation. Call that worship or just behaving well, it is the best path.

what i was saying back there was that the christian bible (in case i need to be even more specific) is the primary religous text for the christian religion...at least that is what i have seen (among various christian denominations)
.....as if it was crazy for me to say such a thing.

'course i guess it is always enough to get you hollered at.

as for it's being "simple, direct and obvious"...i don't know...considering the various christian denominations.

I got an interpretation (of the sacred words) right here in my pocket. It will answer all your questions and make you feel so good.

I'm not hollering. The point is the text is varied, the denominations are varied, and they all interpret. That's the same for all religions I'm aware of although the texts for Eric worship are scarce and I'm not too sure about the liturgies.

The shared bits are important. Montini's work I mentioned earlier concerned itself with the shared parts of the religious texts and faiths. As for me, I just did the score for The Belly of the Fish after performing the song for a post-tornado service (we had no power so an acoustic tune was needed). Then we performed it with a band. So far so good. Christian services but a pre-Christian story. The first group to ask for it after that is a Jewish youth choir. Turns out the story is important to them on Yom Kippur. My very good friend, a cantor, sent it out to her cantor's list. I am delighted. The Old Testament is a bigger market it turns out.

When we try, we can make it work, share and enjoy each other.

It would have helped, had the Zionist of the Jews has even tried to understand the culture of which they were stealing land from. It would have helped America and the World had we tried to understand Our Native American Culture. It was one of our founders who said this of Our Natives, "After what we have done to them, they can only hate us." Would serve the Middle East well if the leaders of Israel could say as much about Palestine.

Wow! I didn't know we got to choose. Almost sounds democratic. Who is running for god next time?

I guess John Prine had it right: "All them gods are just about the same."

And so are the people that worship them...I said that...
