I'm watching the news, just trying to figure out why someone would do this.
My daughter Laura attended VA Tech...she graduated in 2004. When she attended, she spent a lot of time with friends in West AJ where some of the shootings occurred
As a parent, you send your kid off to college, without too many worries about their personal safety...you've taught them as best as you could to be careful, be responsible and don't take stupid risks . The college campus looks like an insulated world...a safe, academic world...and you forget that sometimes the ugliness in the world can seep in with tragic results. You don't even imagine that a nut case with a gun would open fire on kids in a classroom and in a dorm. The whole thing is just so tragic and senseless.

how right you are sue by things being tragic and senseless. there seems to be too much violence being filtered into everything, music, video games,tv, etc and i can see how todays youth are out of control and it saddens me that most parents don't care or have the time needed to bring their children up properly.
it seems that no place is really safe anymore, sad to say. i can remember walking out late at night going home and no one would bother you, but now people will roll ya over just for the thrill of it.
there has to be a way to try to end violence. i believe that one way is to be nice to others, give a smile, help out people when in need. mabye, just mabe things will start to turn around.

There's a whole lot of questions that need to be answered. There is no doubt that one crazy person over the line can cause a lot of havoc, but how is it that this can go on for hours in two building before the police can get a handle on this. How is it they don't consider this a terrorist attack ??? This is just about way too much terror for you average day at school . . ya think ! What the hell, does the Pappa Gov have to politically downplay any tragedy . . . I'm still upset about shit in our pet food !

I agree with you 100% Freaky...Whatever happened to peace, love, and happiness? Today we live in a dark grey black and white and a broken Crayola box world full of angry people and its hard to be nice to others these days. You try to be nice to someone and they disrespect you, its hurtful. No one has nothing else better to do than put their guilt trip on you or get jealous of you because of that your qualities inner and outer. Its hard to find good friends today they stab you in the back and use you, its mean! No human being can change the world only God. Enough said...

Maybe it's partly because I went to UT, where the omnipresent Tower always is in your peripheral vision, and where I lost a (distant) relative in that awful slaughter, but as horrible and tragic as today's events are, AND THEY ARE, I don't think people, in general or one-by-one, are any different than they've ever been. What's does seem different is the rules. The "New Rules" give so much more freedom to someone like the guy at Virginia Tech today. You can have semi-automatic weapons now, no questions asked, (so you can mow down Bambi's entire extended family, I guess!!??!!) and in many places, concealed handguns are a-ok. Police jurisdictions can't share information about weapon purchases, thanks to the NRA. Cities and universities think they can't afford to keep the police:citizen ratio up to what it used to be. (They can't afford NOT to, IMHO.) Government does everything but what it's there to do. Well, maybe that last part is only a difference in degree from the past. Why the people aren't in the streets tomorrow demanding gun control and withdrawal from the Iraq Occupation to protect their precious children is just beyond me, but they won't be. And that's no different than the past, either. It's always just a few, but those few can effect change. Seize the moment; talk it up at work, or write your senators and representative; do whatever fits you best, but say something to somebody tomorrow. If fifty people do it ...

After the massacre of about 30 people one afternoon in 1996 in Port Arthur Tasmania the government here banned all rifles except when in certain cases people could have a licence. A buyback was arranged and the govt gave out heaps of money to obtain the weapons then mountains of them were destroyed, the same thing happened with handguns a few years ago. But of course we don't have a Constitution that allows any idiot "the right to bear arms"

Your right Shel, people need to get out on the steets and change the laws AND the Constitution, so the idiots can't use it as an excuse.

Seven more soldiers dead in Iraq since Sat and who knows how many innocent Iraqis. Where are the one minute silences for them also.

I've been waking early with a new story for the story board and felt I just had to get it out so I could sleep. I hoped it would make you all laugh a little and bring some fun and joy,,,,,,,,but I just don't think I feel like it today.

Shelley, you're so right. And this young generation sees violence just as a way of life. They don't see their actions as being "bad" or "wrong"... it just "is what it is."

One of my classes of 8th graders is so out of control and no amount of detentions or suspensions is going to change it. I don't even know where to begin! And it does scare me working in a school.

This is so terrible. I don't understand either why no government does anything about that easy access to weapons. Is this gunmaker lobby so strong? This has happened so often now. I know you cannot be protected from anything or anybody, there always will be disturbed people, but the danger could be minimized. Why do they build seatbelts, airbags, helmets for protection, but sell weapons to almost anybody.

it's a scary world,

nothing was prophesied 1000's of years ago, the great mass of us have only realized civil rights relatively recently. the modern world is difficult to comprehend at times, time moves very quickly in this modern age and people can lose their footing, it is difficult enough for people who are coping to keep coping let alone look around and provide a safety net for others and this can be particularly difficult for the young who have grown up in a world with time shooting by so quickly. relax, breath deep, figure out how you can help and make a difference
