It's a mess! http://cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com/2007/ ... explosion/

I spoke with Regina... she, John, Paul and Kristen are all okay. John is working, and will probably be going nuts with redirecting trains. He's near Penn Station, while the problem is over by Grand Central.

Arnie? any other Manhattanites or commuters.... please check in!

Thanks for the concern wyld...
as it happens, i work on 50th and Park these days (which sits atop of the tracks going in/out of Grand Central), and even more coincidentally, stayed in the city last night to meet friends for dinner. I was walking uptown on Lexington Avenue at 5:45, and was at the restaurant at 6PM - around 73 St. One of our party came a few minutes later and told us about the cloud of steam he had seen down by Grand Central, but we were unaware of the actual pipe explosion. It wasn't until just after dinner that my wife called me to check on my location and condition, that we learned the full extent. There is a small frozen zone around Lex from 39th to 43d St. today, creating small havoc with traffic, and lots of gawkers heading down 41st Street to go look at the new hole in the ground. Such is life in the big city!
