Any one catch the Saddleback Church presidential forum Saturday night, 8-16-08? Pastor Rick Warren, the moderator, asked McCain and Obama to give an income amount as to what defines rich.

"Where do you move from middle class to rich?” Warren asked. Obama said, “if you are making $150,000 a year or less, as a family, then you’re middle class.”

McCain, supposedly joking said, “How about $5 million?”

WARREN: "Everybody talks about, you know, taxing the rich, but not the poor, the middle class. At what point, give me a number, give me a specific number. Where do you move from middle class to rich? […]"

MCCAIN: "How about $5 million? No, but seriously, I don’t think you can, I don’t think seriously that the point is I’m trying to make, seriously, and I’m sure that comment will be distorted but the point is…that we want to keep people’s taxes low, and increase revenues. … So, it doesn’t matter really what my definition of rich is because I don’t want to raise anybody’s taxes. I really don’t."

I guess if you're not married to a beer heiress, then making less than five million a year ain't a lot of dough. Talk about needing a reality check!

Not to mention McSame's interpretation of life begins ......"at conception." According to that, most forms of birth control would be "immoral". The way I understand it, The Pill, IUDs, The Patch, Morning After Pill don't prevent conception. They prevent the fertilized egg from implanting in the womb. So, it'll be back to condoms, The Sponge, spermicides, the rhythm method and abstinence for the biblical definition of sex.

You're right about the "stone throwing distractions". Most politicians (especially republicans) love stirring the pot with B.S. divisive issues in order to avoid having to address the important ones-----the war, global warming, etc. Bush avoids the issues by going on vacation, like he is now, even with 2 wars and the Russian/Georgian crises looming. Calling him stupid is an insult to stupid people!

I don't think I could support any of them. At least not in the fashion they're used to and not on my salary! Forget it! Especially the guy who can't remember how many houses he has! Oh, wait ... not the same kind of support, is it.

But, semi-seriously, I voted for the person I believed in, even though I knew he didn't have a snowball's chance in a hot lobster pot and Dubya wound up getting in for two terms to screw the planet (Yep! It's my fault!). But now I think that sometimes you have to take the lesser of what you believe to be the bad, suffer the serious wound rather than a killing stroke, swallow your pride and go for the better of the bad. While it may be noble, sometimes sticking to one's perceived righteousness of principles can end in disaster. But I guess there's always the warm, fuzzy feeling one gets knowing that they "stuck to they're guns" even if the planet's going down the crapper at an even more accelerated rate. Not me. Not this time!

The major dilemma for me these days is trying to strike a balance between the nature of the political process and spirituality. Outwardly, these concepts appear diametrically opposed. It's very difficult for me to concentrate on the spiritual while wading through the sewage that the political machine by nature excretes. I find it extremely helpful to tune in to Arlo's example. He has always been very topical, without becoming bogged down in the petty and the nasty. He uses humor, humility and satire to navigate the important and controversial dark waters, with the primary destination being Peace and Hope.

One more observation: I remember Arlo saying (during a rendition of 'Amazing Grace', and referring to Lee Hays) that you've got to do it for yourself before you can do it for the rest of the world.
