I think Tina Fey will do just fine. And I hope SP has as lovely a remaining life as Dan Quayle.

Sorry, Cheryl but can't agree. Good luck, but not for whatever her plans are.

Hope away. From where I sit reading the cumulative trends, aka, the zeitgeist, she is not going away. She is gaining in strength.

Newton's Law of Spin insists the challenge of politics is understanding that for every statement, there is a counter statement and it comes down to the complexity of which create the biggest whorl that then dominates the conversation. Strange attractors are made of many conflicting pushes and pulls that don't necessarily seem to be reinforcing one another but in the biggest vector, do.

The same impulse that is making people turn off their TVs today to avoid the media carrion feeding on Michael Jackson's corpse is putting her in a position of strength in two years. All anyone has to do to make sure that happens is to keep assailing her in public. The fear is palpable from the left and the right is beginning to regroup. What the professional pundits detest about her, a considerable number of lesser mortals love.

Here's the kicker: it is not her but the emotions she encapsulates and if not her, it may be someone slicker but worse.

len, I agree with you in part, but the reality is that SP and her followers (her base, so to speak) are in the minority. She will NEVER succeed in national politics because she will NEVER be able to attract the "center" the way Obama did. You are also dead wrong about the left fearing her and her ilk; the left would like nothing better than to have her as a target (again) to run against.

I think she is a golddigger.

Obviously , she quit. She will always have that legacy, and doubts should linger in every voter's mind ( should she ever get on a ballot again) as to her core values. She is choosing to serve herself and her personal finances over the people of Alaska. She cannot take the heat so she's getting out of the kitchen. It aint worth the headache, its not enough money to even pay the Nordstroms bill.

I think it is interesting as to how this is being spun as a mystery, or why its even surprising.

I don't think there is a mystery. I think she told the truth: a half million in legal bills just to keep the story straight, can't even take her daughter to a ball game without being assaulted on national TV, members of her party publishing stories about her?

Hell, who wants that kind of gig? She is ambitious without a doubt, but then so are most successful people. She may not represent your values or mine but she is nothing I fear or even worry about. We had eight years of uninterrupted malfeasance with the press assisting and few even bothering to notice the crimes or courageous enough to call them that. Meanwhile, I watched families following the National Guard convoys out of their state for hundreds of miles to wave one more time to their sons, daughters, fathers and brothers as the idiot the lionized sent them off to avenge his father.

Meanwhile, national networks are devoting a day of prime time broadcasting to the memorial services of a pedophile. Why?

This is seriously whacked, or maybe simply, evil.

Obama isn't even part of this story.

The majority elected George W. Bush twice. It is amazing how fast people grow their hair longer overnight just as they are convinced to accept the stories that MJ paid out multi millions of dollars to avoid the hassles of law suits as long as the ladies on the View tell them to accept it. Understand, I'm not a Palinista. I'm just not willing to accept the spoon feeding from a media gone mad because it lost it's purpose and ethical center and now treats the public like salivating dogs, a thought that once admitted both creates a reality in some and shatters others.

Try to remember, that is precisely what the pundits and press said about Richard Nixon comparing him to John Kennedy two years before Nixon won the White House by adopting the speeches of George Wallace and cleaning them up just enough to get that Silent Majority. The center is always in flux.

Politics aren't always about us. They are a frame in which we see ourselves in relation to the world. The MJ coverage is distinctly creepy as was the ferocity of the Obama campaign. Behind the coolness of the candidate was a bloody mean machine willing to do anything to anyone in their own party who got in their way. It isn't forgotten. If anything, it is forgone for the moment.

It is not one whorl that makes me hyperaware. It is the kinds and types of several of them in close proximity that quite suddenly join into one force just as metal anneals and hardens.

The Devil and Daniel Webster live. We too easily become what we despise because we cannot separate our values from our actions and we choose to fight fire with fire. The left learned from the right and used their tactics. Now we is them. Our only hope is our shells haven't hardened yet.

It's about what economic conditions are like during the election cycle for the most part.Right or wrong. If George Bush left us in good shape, John McCain might be president right now.The stupid war became a sidenote, sad as that is.
If there is little or no progress on the economic front, Obama will be vunerable come election time ,or the next democrat will be in 2016.

len, she was hardly "assaulted" on national tv. It was a tasteless joke by Letterman about the "wrong" daughter, for which he apologized. SP got lots of "victim" capital out of it, however, and most Americans not already in her camp are seeing through her act.

I don't think I'd want anybody to be president of any country who had a "poor me" victim attitude/mentality. That would just be a disaster!

And then he tried for ratings by inviting her on his show. It backfired on him. The public didn't go along with it and he gave her a week of press she wouldn't have had otherwise.

Cluetrain: it's not just tasteless and he has a staff to sort things like that out. It's deliberate but dumb. Had it been my wife and daughter, I'd be sitting in jail but he would be in plastic surgery. I suspect that is the more common reaction.

I'm a Democrat insofar as I hew to any party at all. During the campaign, some Obama staffers decided it would be useful to go after Chelsea Clinton to add to the tasteless things they were doing to her mother. It had to be explained to them that the line they were crossing would turn a political campaign into total war with every tawdry bit known in the Obama's personal lives fair game. Once they realized it, they backed off. Even in the Beltway, some lines aren't crossed.

I don't know what's up with Palin but so far she is quite cunning and I don't think out of the game. She's dangerous in the way that all backwoods pols are: outsider mojo. She gave McCain a heckuva poll bounce and with experience, she will become more attractive should the winds of change not favor Obama. The best tact is to steer away from confrontations and fights where there is nothing to win. Palin is Stupid Bait and by that, I don't mean she is stupid. I mean she is bait and it is attracting all the people that the right need to knock off balance before 2012.

If we could stick to issues and keep the kids out of it, we might make progress. Obama was saved not by centrism but by a media that went so far into the tank as to lose every ounce of credibility they had not already lost by their cowardice in not confronting Bush and Company. Larry is right: had the economy not turned sour, Palin would be the Vice President today and considering the weird turns in the gas prices, my thought is the Republicans weren't that interested in a win. They screwed up because they didn't expect a blow out. It wasn't so much that Obama won. Bush lost. Big.

If the left continues to smirk, the right will recover. The center does not hold in the face of continuing deficits and conflicts. Palin is a distraction but a dammed attractive one and that is what is scaring the left. Think of the 1930s when the whole country was rooting for John Dillinger and the Barrows. The public isn't voting for morality or competence. They are voting for image. That's bad. Unfortunately, it is pervasive.

And they vote their pain. There is a very large off the books housing inventory that can be dumped into the market any time and that will most certainly take the wind out of Obama's sales economically. Only six to eight years marks the time from the beginning of Camelot to the disasters of Tet, Hue and Chicago. We turned from liberal to ultra conservative fast and that was without the assistance of the media when it was a reasonably neutral news source. These days we can't tell fact from fiction when all we have is TV and the Internet isn't much help if we have to rely on Huffington. The media behaviorists have a harder job next time.

The mainstream media increases the creep factor year after year and I see no sign of that changing. If they think for even a millisecond that the right is regaining strength, they will turn on Obama and run toward the other money. The Internet trick won't work twice just as the talk radio trick ran out of steam.

The Democrats hold the White House and a supermajority. If they fail, they fail big. Barring a massive disaster, they won't recover by 2010 but unless they bat 1000 and hit a few over the fences, come 2012, I expect a shift in the House and Senate if for no other reason than the natives get restless. That means we get one sure and short opportunity for change.

It will be better if we don't waste it hassling housewives with a talent for bagging moose meat. They don't matter. Jobs matter.
