Larry's "40 Years" thread got me to thinking about where I was when the moon landing took place.

I was living in a small apartment in Laurelton, Queens, NYC with my wife and 1-1/2 yr. old son. At the time, I was not long out of the USAF and working as a technical writer for a company on Long Island that was a subcontractor of Grumman, the Bethpage firm that built the LEM (Lunar Expedition Module) that landed on the moon. I didn't, however, work on the manuals for the LEM but worked on manuals for the OV-1 Mohawk series aircraft that saw heavy use for the Army in Nam.

I remember we watched the landing on our little black and white tv set, complete with rabbit ears.

Would like to hear other recollections from those of us old enough to remember (probably most of us, I would think). Of course, it was still the 60's, so not remembering is understandable!

I was 12 and a half years old watching it on tv at home with my folks and three little sisters, all the while working on a plan to get my folks to let me go to Woodstock the following month.

I believe that I was in a friend's basement rec (wreaked) room in an enhanced perceptive state. It's all kind of fuzzy now, but hey, at my age what isn't? I remember hearing people saying "Holy shit!" a lot.

I was fifteen sitting around with all of my chums who's Dad's built the Saturn V. Downtown the Dad's had Von Braun hoisted on their shoulders carrying him around the town square. Our big day was the launch. The Saturn V was a "good ride" to quote the crew.

A year later I was pushing a grocery cart for women who's husbands had all been suddenly fired from NASA as Nixon and Agnew dismantled the house that VB's Rocket Team built. Then came hatchet man Rocco Petrone to dismantle the rest so the next victory would be an "all american effort". A few years after that, to satisfy's Reagan's money backers, they hounded Arthur Rudolph (the actual designer of the Saturn V) out of the country for alledged war crimes forty years after they snuck him into the country and he became a citizen with rights that the investigators violated wantonly. Neal Scher is a bastard.

I remember a lot of people sitting around a small black-and-white TV someone brought over. The furniture was mattresses on the floor, brick-and-board bookcases, and 'end tables' and 'coffee tables' made of empty, non-smelly frozen-chicken crates (from the alley behind Kentucky Fried Chicken) covered with Indian fabric. The air was hot, thick, smoky, and fragrant and every now and then someone was moved to say "Wowwwwwww, man ... " or "Far out!" or "Can you believe it!! They're really frickin (sp) there!" I do remember that we had a hard time getting our altered minds around the fact that some dude was actually standing on the moon.

We were probably drinking cold Dr. Pepper and eating LOTS of Fritos and bean dip. I know it was that night because most any other evening that July, we'd have been at Trinity Park (Fort Worth--too hot to be indoors) and the living room scenario would have been pretty much the same, but later in the night, with music and no TV. Don't want to re-live it, but memories don't get much better.

I remember it was on 25/7 all nite and day pre-empting all other tv shows. I remember watching it on my folks sectional sofa. That was about all the entertainment going on...

I know I watched it, but don't remember all the details of the day... I was 17 at the time.

I do but the leaping thing is probably Quatermass and the Pit, aka, Five Million Years to Earth.

The only thing I remember watchin' on the TV set
during the summer of 1969 (and the only reason I had
bought a cheap used and broken TV set) was The Johnny Cash Show

That TV should have been the first and only TV set I ever bought.

The moon landing or what ever happened would have been
just another government sham to me at the time, serving no purpose but to
put taxpayer money in the pockets of a few, just like the Vietnam War
and a list a mile long.


Fourty years later it has all been proved many times over

Americans are so gullible ..... basicly a herd (or two)of sheep

The Cash Show was pretty good tho
(well worth the 5 dollars for the set)
