It's not surprising, but still, I sure wish we'd all spend more time listening to one another and not jumping to so many conclusions.
Reading Arlo's take on the Occupy movement was surprising, to say the least. He's either listening to different people than I am, or hearing different things said. It wasn't my impression that those who don't understand the Occupy movement think government should serve the haves, at all. In fact, that misses the point of what they are saying entirely -- at least, those I've been tuning into. Like I say, though, maybe we're listening to different people.
Thing is, as long as we take this Old World "Us vs. Them" mentality seriously and continue to abide by it, we don't become Americans yet -- and an American is a wonderful thing to be. But we are the UNITED STATES of America. It's WE THE PEOPLE, not "Them vs. Us." And that applies to both sides of the discussion. People will believe and think differently. It can't be helped, but it can be respected. We can turn out to be wrong, and have to rethink our position: I know I have.
Anyway, it's been a while since tuning in. Memphis hasn't handed me a golden pass to paradise, but at least there's been less malicious gossip to contend with, and that has made all the difference to me.

Take care guys, and remember that even if someone doesn't think the way you do about anything, they are still worthy of your respect.

What exactly is it that prompted this response?
