I thought this would be a missed thread, since I closed the old one, and that at least Kerry and Rbrown would miss it!
So....here is volume 2!

I'll be happy to start with a line that really gets the point across:

"Naked as the eyes of a clown".....John Prine

"People are afraid of themselves, of their own reality; their feelings most of all. People talk about how great love is, but that's bullshit. Love hurts. Feelings are disturbing. People are taught that pain is evil and dangerous. How can they deal with love if they're afraid to feel? Pain is meant to wake us up. People try to hide their pain. But they're wrong. Pain is something to carry, like a radio. You feel your strength in the experience of pain. It's all in how you carry it. That's what matters. Pain is a feeling. Your feelings are a part of you. Your own reality. If you feel ashamed of them, and hide them, you're letting society destroy your reality. You should stand up for your right to feel your pain."

~Jim Morrison~

Fear the Lords who are secret among us.
The Lords are within us.
Born of sloth and cowardice.

In the womb we are all blind cave fish.

Interesting question. I like song lyrics & I read a lot of books. Some people read a book where a leaf falls out of a tree, & they see that as a metaphor for man's eternal struggle to resolve some inner conflict. I see it as a leaf falling out of a tree. That's why I'm often reluctant to enter these types of discussions, but here goes.

Who wrote better lyrics than Woody Guthrie? 3 of my favorites are "Pretty Boy Floyd," "I Ain't Got No Home," & "Jesus Christ." Woody had a knack for writing a song about a particular person in a particular time period, & at the end he made comments that are still true today & will be true until the end of the world.

"Pretty Boy Floyd": "I've seen lots of funny men/Some will rob you with a 6-gun/Some with a fountain pen."
"I Ain't Got No Home": "The gamblin' man is rich & the workin' man is poor."
"Jesus Christ": "This song was written in New York City/Of rich men & preachers & slaves/If Jesus was to preach/What he preached in Galilee/They would lay Jesus Christ in his grave."

many people have written better lyrics than woody did..

but he was prolific...not many people wrote that many good lyrics..he'd write on anything..probably even your forehead if you
held still long enough.

i do envy arlo for even getting to speak with him...and personally,,,i think/feel ag does his father, mother, and family proud!

the guthries as a whole, haven't done anything to me except enhance my life..i wasn't raised by people that encouraged me to be me.

i feel more like woody raised me...

and i count that as joy!

It's getting to the point where I'm no fun any more
I am sorry
Sometimes it hurts so badly I must cry out loud
I am lonely
I am yours, you are mine, you are what you are
You make it hard

Remember what we've said, and done
And felt about each other
Oh, babe, have mercy
Don't let the past remind us of what we are not now
I am not dreaming

I am yours, you are mine, you are what you are
You make it hard

Tearing yourself away from me now, you are free
And I am crying
This does not mean I don't love you, I do, that's forever
Yes, and for always

I am yours, you are mine, you are what you are
You make it hard

Something inside is telling me that I've got your secret
Are you still listening?
Fear is the lock, and laughter the key to your heart
And I love you

I am yours, you are mine, you are what you are
And you make it hard
And you make it hard
And you make it hard

Friday evening
Sunday in the afternoon
What have you got to lose?
Tuesday morning
Please be gone, I'm tired of you
What have you got to lose?

Can I tell it like it is?
Help me I'm suffering
Listen to me baby
It's my heart that's suffering
Help me, I'm crying to you
It's dyin' and that's what I have to lose

I've got an answer
I'm going to fly away
What have I got to lose?
Will you come see me
Thursdays and Saturdays
What have you got to lose?

Chestnut brown canary
Ruby throated sparrow
Sing a song, don't be long
Thrill me to the marrow

Voices of the angels
Ring around the moonlight
Asking me, said she so free
How can you catch the sparrow?

Lacy lilting lady
Losing love lamenting
Change my life, make it right
Be my lady

Do do do do do, do do do do do do
Do do do do do, do do do do

Que linda me la traiga Cuba
La reina de la Mar Caribe
Cielo sol no tiene sangreahi
Y que triste que no puedo vaya
Oh va, oh va, va!

- Crosby Stills and Nash

Rainy Day People

Rainy day people always seem to know when
it's time to call
Rainy day people don't talk, they just listen
til they've heard it all
Rainy day lovers don't lie when they tll 'ya
they've been down like you
Rainy day people don't mind if you're cryin'
a tear or two

If you get lonely, all you really need is
that rainy day love
Rainy day people all know there's no sorrow
they can't rise above
Rainy day lovers don't love any others, that
would not be kind
Rainy day people all know how it hangs on
a piece of mind

Rainy day lovers don't lie when they tell
you, they've been there too
Rainy day people don't mind if you're cryin'
a tear or two.

Rainy day people always seem to know when
you're feeling blue
High stepping strutters who land in the
gutters sometimes need one too
Take it or leave it, or try to believe it
If you've been down too long

Rainy day lovers don't hide love inside they
just pass it along
Rainy day lovers don't hide love inside they
just pass it along

-Gordon Lightfoot

**************CHILDREN*********************

A child who is raised by an unworthy hand
Has less of a chance of being a man
Who will try to remember and then understand
Why a mother would cry while her husband lay dead
Shot down by the gun of a runaway train
Called life in the fast lane it all ends the same
Well the same children's lives they will always regret
Are the children who never forget

A man ends of tired and walking alone
On a street corner singing for a penny a song
What he cannot remember was never his own
That's the answer he gives when he speaks of his home
Well the steets are my life I don't know anymore
Where the children are junkies and the ladies are whores
Well the same childrens lives they will always regret
Are the children who never forget

CHORUS

Goodnight, Goodnight sweet child
Why don't you dream with the angels to forget for awhile
To forget of the life that's been handed to you
Where everything's real, yet nothing is true
Well perhaps you can change what the cards always read
For the children who never forget

For a time they were counting you out of this race
You stood up like a champion that had fallen with grace
Never showing the anguish that had covered your face
You were raped and forgotten left to die in disgrace
Shot down by the gun of a runaway train
Called life in the fast lane it all ends the same
Well the same children's lives they will always regret
Are the children who never forget

Repeat chorus 2 X

Written by 'Raul Malo'

Favorite verse in that song

*Well the streets are my life, I don't know anymore
Where the children are junkies and the ladies are whores

But mostly the chorus grabs me. Theres Raul singing with band (The Mavericks) and a dozen little children in the background singing along.....It's GREAT stuff!!!
