With the voting going on in NYC today, I would sappose folks would like someone to fill 'Rudy's shoes. And as known, Rudy can only hold office for said amt. or terms...?

Why is that? Is that something that varies from County to County within a state???

* THE REASON I ASK: I live in a City (Ogdensburg NY) and we had the same Mayor for 25 yrs.... Just last yr. we got a new one. The old one (Richard Lockwood) was a cool guy, and he always won by a landslide.

**Funny part was (in my mind) is Richard was always a liberal, running on a Dem ticket?
Kinda a hippy kind of dude...I know allot of people miss him, as mayor.

*can't figure out NYC? Why fix something that's not broken???

OK... here I go, jumping into political discussion, which is not my strong point...

If I'm not mistaken, the City passed a law (maybe in the mid-seventies? John Lindsay?) that limited the Mayor to two terms... Not sure about when it was...

But in a way it makes sense... the presidency is limited to two terms, why not the mayoralty? Not to belittle a small town, where a mayor can hold office for many terms without any trouble, I think in a city as large, diverse and nationally important as New York, I think term limits makes sense. It is far easier for the small-town mayor to keep in touch with the day-to-day needs of his/her constituency than it is in a city of several million people. (Let me guess... in your town, you can chat with the mayor in the post office or in the local diner, and let him know what's on your mind) {edit: OK... just looked up the population of Ogdensburg - 13,000 - so it's not as small-towny as I thought but still easier for the constituency to reach the mayor directly}

Of course, the law can be changed... It was changed when the term limits were put in place... but it would require a vote of approval in the State Legislature, because it is an alteration to the City Charter granted by the State.

it's even better than that wyld...
first understand, that I am no fan of roodie guiliani... I cannot vote in NYC anymore, since I'm a long island resident, but I have a longstanding grudge against roodie since his days as the US District Atty for NY. I admire how he's handled the current situation, but he's still a slime bucket in my books...
anyway, the joke's on him.
RUDY is the person who rammed Term Limits for the Mayor, and the entire City Council, when he got into office 8 years ago. Until then you could keep getting elected until you died in office! Rudy saw term limits as a way to insure that Republicans in a mostly Democratic city would have some better opportunity to cut in from time to time... Now... 8 years later, roodie is caught in his own web.. and you bet he wakes every morning regretting his early decision to stack a deck against himself!

just too bad that the mayoral choices are both pretty lame...

however, in Nassau county, it might be real interesting election if the Dems hold up as expected!

to be continued... ?

In Nassau, we have Tom Suozzi (dem) who has been mayor of Glen Cove for a few years already running against a businessman, Bruce Bent (rep) Bent claims he can run the county like he runs his business, clearly claims he is not a politician, will not take a salary, and will get out after one term... in other words, a non-candidate. In the current fiscal environment, what Nassau needs is clearly someone with political savvy, along with a history of getting the specific job done. That's Suozzi... Also, which doesn't hurt, Suozzi is a young up-and-comer... Bent is an old-fart. He eschews normal door to door campaigning... which is usually what pays off big in local elections like this.
In the past three weeks, I've met all the major dem. candidates and some of the GOP's as well (with the notable exception of Bent) at my train station... can't say as I would mind voting for anyone who's bothered to get up the same time as me just to stand there catching god knows what germs from shaking my hand!

So then what you are saying is: If you knew Souzzi like I know Souzzi, you might get Bent? Image (asked to the tune of "If you knew Susie")

I'm not sure I like term limits much, but I don't know about what you said there, Todd. If that were true what percentage of incumbents would ever be re-elected?

I really don't know what you're talking about Todd. Not all offices have term limits at all - in the legal sense. If you're not cynical about politicians at your age, then..well, shit..wanna buy a bridge?

It seems to me that, unlike legal term limits, vote-em-out term limits can be (and often are) rendered ineffective by copious application of Stepford ointment. (Recipe: combine money, favors, spin, and apathy. Distribute repeatedly over affected area.)Image

That's why I said "in the legal sense" Todd. You're just being cranky for crankiness's sake now. You can do better than that.

Pragmatism:

1 : a practical approach to problems and affairs <tried to strike a balance between principles and pragmatism>

2 : an American movement in philosophy founded by C. S. Peirce and William James and marked by the doctrines that the meaning of conceptions is to be sought in their practical bearings, that the function of thought is to guide action, and that truth is preeminently to be tested by the practical consequences of belief

It doesn't sound all that bad to me, after years of the pendulum swinging first to one idealogy and then the other, til we get to the point where it's impossible to have a sustained plan of action about anything. I'm just sick and tired of wheel spinning, aren't you?

Ceashell, that's the formula, alright. I've been reading Joan Didion's "Political Fictions" she describes the campagin/election process, just as you did, a moving performance art show, closed system, made up of political hacks, the candidates, fat cat contributors & the media entourage. The sum total of their output is ever-changing backgrounds, in front of which, the candidates pontificate on non-issues, sufficiant to maintain the interests of "true believers" while fat cats wait till post election to cash in their contribution chips.
The press hack says to the media, "today will be two airport tarmacs, one shopping mall, and a senior center"
And, to this traveling circus, we entrust our gov't.... nauseating.....
"see the cables sparklin, watch the little wheels roll..."
