Thanks for the link--it was a very interesting (and troubling) article. I am increasingly worried about this iimpending "war on Iraq" that our Pres feels is so necessary. Have we given up on UN inspections?

President Carter, lives in a small compound beside the road, he walks or bikes into town to go shopping and of course go to church, he gets his hands dirty building houses for low income familys, when three mile island was a hazard, he went in and toured the site, and now he offers some very sound observations about the USA of today. I like the man, I admire his honesty and his courage. I also admired that he stood by his brother even when the rest of the world said that Billy was an embrassesment, Jimmy Carter stood by him.

I've always been impressed with Jimmy Carter's thoughtful, reasoned and practical approaches to critical issues. He strikes cords of logic, with his ideas.
That's probably why the Belltway crowd sent a rabbid rabbit, after him...same bunch who sent exploding cigars, to Fidel Castro

Nice to see President Carter being recognized for his years of work for peace and justice. Nice snub to the Bushes in the Peace Prize award, too! Have you noticed that the media doesn't call the President "President" anymore--it's been Mr. Clinton and Mr. Bush. Hmmmmm...

Isn't that great? Nice to see the good guys get the press every once in a while. What a wonderful man.

Something that not too many people know about President Carter is that he's the only person in the world to have looked a nuclear meltdown square in the face (as it were).

Back when he was serving on a nuclear submarine, there was a meltdown at a power plant in Canada. It was much like what happened at Three Mile Island, except that the rod actually had melted. It needed to be replaced, and that meant someone had to go in and do it.

No one could be ordered to, since at the time no one knew what the repercussions would be.There was no guarantee of coming out alive, and sterility was but one of a long list of possible -- or even probable --outcomes.

Somebody had to volunteer for the job, and Jimmy Carter was the man who did. Lucky for him (and for us all) he didn't become sterile or die or go insane, as it was expected that he well might -- although who knows what health problems he's had to endure that he doesn't let on about in public. Anyway, while you're counting up his admirable qualities, you can add courage and self-sacrifice to the mix.

When I look at national elections, I always look at how D.C. votes. They're the people who see the government up close on a day to day basis, and are most affected by it on a personal level. In a word, they have the inside scoop on the people involved. When President Carter ran for a second term, he won D.C. in a landslide. Too bad the rest of the country didn't follow suit, eh?
