Arlo is coming to "The Egg" in Albany on Nov 8th and being a member of The Egg I was going to buy some "UpFront" tickets. Looks like that wont happen. It is a WAMC fund raiser with seating running $100 (The best seats in the Pit) $50 (Fair seats) and $25 (for those with good eyesight and hearing)
So I guess I am priced out of this one..

PS.. Not to be out-done I see Simon & Garfunkel tickets are going for as high as $200 out west, I wonder what they will ask around here in New York State?

Man I feel for ya. I been thru the same thing some yrs back when Arlo did a show in Baltimore that was a fundraiser to feed hungry people & the tix were $150. We couldn't afford to go. If that show had been in VA I would've been devastated. Whoever put it on was the one who picked the ticket prices. When I asked if they had cheaper tickets cuz we couldn't afford, they didn't. Didn't seem to care that my hubby was disabled & we can't afford. Maybe you can get the cheap seats. By the time we can afford tix to the 2 Birchmere shows in Alexandria & the Staunton show we'll be in the back row LOL! Good luck! I can certainly sympathize with you.I've had to pass up many Arlo concerts because I just couldn't swing the cash,or the time,or either.If all goes well I'll be at the Autumn Revival in October,only by the good graces and incredible kindness and
generosity by a saint who wishes to remain anonymous.He had heard that I was undergoing
treatment for lung cancer,and it had been a dream of mine for years to see Arlo play at The Old Trinity Church.If not for the selfless generosity of a man I have never even met I might never have seen that dream come true.

My wife's sister and her husband are in
Albany visiting his dad (all the way from Florida).He is originally from Albany.She is
originally from Maine.
They are traveling east to Bennington,Vt.
(where they are considering purchasing a motel) then north to visit us here in Porter,Maine for the weekend.
Checking out the map for the whereabouts of Stockbridge,Mass. I noticed that Bennington,Vt. is about 50 miles north.I also noticed that Albany is just west of Bennington,Vt.(50 miles or so?)
Those three places seem to make up a pretty close triangle.
I thought of the triangle on Arlo's signature VW Microbus (which I have on a cap that my brother-in-law just purchased for me).
When you mentioned Albany I was just thinking "aint that odd?"
Anyway,there ought to be a fund anyone could contribute to for those with a desire to see Arlo play,but just can't afford it.

seriously, having been involved in the organization and operation of a charitable fund, you don't want to go there, it's not for the feint of heart... A voluntary fund with no solicitation? Accounting for the funds? Where to invest the funds? Determination of who decides how to disperse the funds? Determination of how to select who to disperse to, and in what amounts? etc. etc...

All that, just for the cause of "tickets to Arlo"??? Let's get a blunder-reality check here!

The current 'method' of folks just posting or announcing that they've got extra tickets, along with the postings (laments?) of those who don't, and the occassional 'anonymous saint', usually provides enough interaction, and tries to meet the true reality of the situation...
Let's face it, offering to buy a ticket to a church show for someone living far away from the church (or whatever the venue), who doesn't have much do-re-mi, isn't exactly doing that person a financial favor... just giving them incentive to spend even more money that they may need for other more important purposes, to just travel back and forth... just to see a one night show???

I guess I have been spoiled, I have had seats in the first few rows on many concerts, Art Garfunkel, Jethro Tull, Pete Seager, County Joe, Arlo and others, and to be able to hear the strings of the guitars resonate and the tone of the voices coming directly to you with definition that an amplifier and speaker cannot come close to mimicking, leaves all other seats lacking.

But the main point of my post is the fact that the cost of a good show is getting out of hand and out of reach for regular folks. The artists that were brought to the fame that they enjoy may have lost touch with the fact that the people who made them famous by buying their records are being left behind when the live performances cost more then a weeks pay for some.
Sure the WAMC fundraiser is a worthy cause, but why is it priced so that only the rich can participate? Instead of one rich person attending for $100 why not ten regular folks attending for $10 each? That is ten happy people spending the money they can afford .vs. one content rich person who probably just went to the show because it was the "politically correct" thing to do and can declare it as a tax write-off!

with a reminder that

1) this IS a benefit, both for WAMC and for the Guthrie Center;
and
2) there are less costly tickets available.

I know I said that my previous post would be all I'd have to say, but I have a little bit more on my mind ...

First, the idea behind the BENEFIT is to make MONEY to support two non-profit organizations...

I don't know how the money is to be distributed, but I know the Guthrie Center will be receiving a fair portion... and WAMC, as a National Public Radio station certainly is deserving of a fair portion as well.

You know very well that, no matter how much money is earned, the costs of such a show will be significant. Just for the sake of having a number to play with, let's assume that it will cost $3000 to cover expenses such as lighting, sound, Egg staff, insurance, etc. I also don't know how many seats will be available in each price range, so I'm just going to guess...

Now for a little math...

If your formula is used... the 982 seats in the auditorium @ $10/seat would bring in $9,820... minus costs of $3000, so the net to be divided between the Guthrie Center and WAMC would be $6820.

Now for the alternative, since we are trying to bring in funds to support various programs of two worthy organizations;

100 seats @ $100 = $10,000
200 seats @ $ 50 = $10,000
682 seats @ $ 25 = $17,050
for a total of ........ $37,050
minus expenses ... <u>($ 3,000)</u>
for a balance of ... $34,050 to be divided between the beneficiaries according to whatever agreement they have made. I have no clue what that agreement is... but I am sure that the Guthrie Center will have funding to do some of the things that are needed after all is said and done...

So stop whining, and make a choice whether you WANT to support these organizations... and yes... YOU have a CHOICE.

And NOW that's all I will say on this matter.

Now if I were drinking a DUFF beer right about now, I would say something like...

But that reply would be uncalled for, unproductive and it would not further my case that some folks would love to contribute to a worthy cause, but they dont have the big bucks to compete with the rich folk. Yea, you can get in for $25, but those seats may as well be outside, the sound quality stinks and the view is worse.
If I were to run a fund raiser for "Regular Folks" I would not rent a tiny hall where they serve wine at intermission and where Suits and Evening gowns are the norm, I would find a place where it is roomy and you would not feel intimidated by the venue or its staff, Lets say rent an off day at Saratoga Performing Arts Center. With room for thousands of ten dollar tickets. I bet SPAC would even donate the venue minus the helps pay.

This is totally off the subject but I had to respond.Thank you Cheryl for your concern.My last CT scan showed that one of the major tumors had shrunk some,signs that the chemo is doing it's job.Good news indeed.I had my fourth chemo treatment this a.m.I will be going for another CT scan between now and the next chemo,3 weeks from today to check my status,and further plans for treatment.
Hoping for those Blundervibes to continue to woork their magic.
I appreciate your thought.
