I'm guessing most folks here grew up on the music of Woodie Guthrie. I still sing his stuff on a regular basis, but that's probably only because I play for children a lot and, Woodie, as you probably know has written some of the world's most famous children's songs. Take Me For A Ride In The Car Car, I'm Gonna Mail Myself To You, Pick It Up, and of course his most famous folk song, This Land Is Your Land. On July 4th in the United States, many people will be reflecting upon the tragedies, as well as the joys of the American experience. Your thoughts may be simply restricted to family and community and that's good too - but try to keep in mind (and heart) that, "This Land Is Your Land". Be proud of it! And while you're at it, why not think of taking two and one half minutes out of your day to sing (or even hum) one of Woodie's songs. As far as true life American songwriters are concerned, I believe Woodie was the greatest of them all. So, on July 4th, do your small part to pay tribute to the man, and to the America you love by singing a Woodie song. You'll be glad you did!

I'll be doing my usual July 4th show during the fireworks display over the city waterfront. Woody Guthrie songs are always my choice to sing for this yearly event.

I'm a children's librarian who does lots of storytimes, and I use Woody's stuff whenever I can. In fact, I created a whole storytime about building, just so I could find an excuse to use "Bling Blang." I also start out my new storytime sessions with Woody's quote about grownups being more like children instead of the other way around. Lots of the parents really like that!
