Johnny Ramone of 'The Ramones' Dies at 55



LOS ANGELES (Sept. 16) - Johnny Ramone, guitarist and co-founder of the seminal punk band "The Ramones" that influenced a generation of rockers, has died. He was 55.

Ramone, who had been fighting a five-year battle with prostate cancer, died in his sleep Wednesday afternoon at his Los Angeles home surrounded by friends and family, said the band's longtime artistic director Arturo Vega.

"He was the guy with a strategy. He was the guy who not only looked after the band's interest but he also was their defender," Vega said in a telephone interview from New York.

Ramone, whose birth name is John Cummings, had been hospitalized in June at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.

Sad news for us punk rock fans, who are probably in the minority around here. Now 3/4 of the Ramones are gone, as is Joe Strummer.

i'm not a big punk rock fan per se...i just happen to like some folks like the ramones and sid vicious for reasons i can't explain...

I remember when I was in high school in the 70's this one Ramones record was real popular & kids would bring it to school & listen to it between classes & at lunch. It has this neat song on it that was a take off on a Beatles song. Haven't heard it in yrs & forgot the title of it. I'm no punk rocker but figure some folks might be interested in hearing about him...

I know some folk fans who like punk rock, & vice versa, & when you think about it they're very similar. There's no gimmickry, just people playing their instruments & singing, & both have that "anybody can do it" quality. At least I see similarities.

I have really wide tastes, so I like both folk and punk. Ramones...well, beyond being just a great band, they're historically important. Both punk and folk have their roots in the disenfranchised.

It was rather a bringdown for me when I heard about Johnny.
