Happy Birthday Woody! From this side, to that one.

Just now, when Stephen Colbert asked television writer David Simon (The Wire, etc.) why his good guys sometimes do bad things and his bad guys sometimes do the right thing, said, "Except for Woody Guthrie and Dick Cheney, most people are not pure good or pure evil." Colbert chuckled and replied, "Yeah, that Guthrie was a tool."

And, after that, Colbert said (I paraphrase), "'This land is your land, this land is my land'? That's socialism!"

The juxtaposition of Cheney/Guthrie was interesting; I'm not sure those were the two I'd have chosen to represent "pure" good or evil (Simon never did say which was which), but it was still very cool to see this little exchange. I've never managed to catch "The Wire," but it is on my Netflix list and hopefully I'll get to it one day.

I'm listening to the Thom Hartmann program on radio. A caller just asked Thom if he'd ever heard of "lucretheists" (loo-cur-the-ists, with an accent on the 'cur'). Thom hadn't. The caller said it was a term coined by Woody Guthrie about the bankers and financiers and bosses who worship nothing but lucre--money. If you google it, it's not out there, but it should be. This caller said he learned it from his dad, who had an old union poster that attributed it to Woody. Very timely and should be revived as a word.

Us lucretheists are getting new religion, we are converting to nolucretheism. (no-loo-cur-the-ism)

Ha, the problem I have about praying for money is that so far it has not worked.
