i put this here as I will be seeing this guy tonight. Last time I saw him he was doing a solo tour in little college dives back, oh, it was 23 years ago and the 100 of us or so who attended were given a real treat. I have been looking forward to this for a long long time!

Have fun seeing him. I have a 45 of him doing the Welcome Back Kotter theme & an old Lovin Spoonful record I weaseled off of my cousin many yrs ago. Think every kid or teen in the 60's or 70's had at least one record of him. He's a great autoharp player too...

He did not play the Auto Harp but he did play the mouth harp and he played it well. The whole thing started off with a bunch of finger picking on Hurt’s I’m Satisfied. John had great stories of hanging out with David Grisman in Washington Square when they were both young and how their first actual recording was together (I did not know that?). David made a comment how it was recently reissued somewhere and he got as many checks for it now as he got back then (some sort of music bizness humor I suppose?). John said there was no generation gap back then because all their heroes were old, older than dirt, and to be in the category of greatest heroes of all you had to be dead. That started an excellent set of old jug band and blues tunes with a few Django-style style jazzy numbers thrown in (I guess mainly for David to show off a bit!). John is a talker and he had some good stories about his father, the harmonica and how he was introduced to Sonny Terry (obviously led into a good harmonica blues). Somehow there was a Coffee blues that ended up in Lovin You (you ever noticed how Coffee blues has a lot in common with Creole Belle). The second set was just fun with stuff like Younger Girl, Make Up Your Mind, Daydream (love that song) a surprise (by the look on David’s face) Wild About My Lovin and the psyche delic Coconut Grove. There was a well done Shady Grove (yes David can sing) thrown in as well. A couple of Jug Band tunes and some more of that Dawg Jazz followed by a Yank Rachell moment that ended with a rockin’ Tap That Thang (just look the other way). I was standing there applauding at the end and calling out for more myself as the lights went up and there was a lot of people talking about coming back in about a month or so to see Arlo! Who would have thought?

Sorry you didn't get to hear John Sebastian play autoharp; he's a good player! He did a workshop at the Mountain Laurel Autoharp Gathering about ten years ago...after the workshop, he walked over to me and asked to play my autoharp, which was an Oscar Schmidt converted to A-D diatonic, with a resonator on the back. He'd spotted it, and was curious about it. I did have him sign it!

That sounds like a neat harp. I bet that autoharp festival was fun. Sebastian always seems to have fun playing his harp, whenever I've seen him on tv...
