Festival celebrates life of
Oklahoma legend

OKEMAH -- The third annual Woody Guthrie Free Folk
Music Festival will kick off Wednesday with five days of
concerts, late-night all-star jams, arts and crafts, children's
activities, food and memorabilia.

The event celebrates the legacy
of Okemah-born singer-
songwriter Woody Guthrie, who
became famous in the late 1930s
and 1940s for his topical songs of
Depression-era hardship and social injustice.

The festival is also dedicated to all those affected by
Huntington's chorea, the disease that claimed Guthrie's life
in 1967 at age 55.

Headlining this year's show are the singer's son, Arlo
Guthrie, and Woody Guthrie's old compatriot, Pete Seeger.
A special fund-raising acoustic concert by Jackson Browne
scheduled for Wednesday has been sold out.

Janet,

Thanks for the articles. The Free Folk Festival was a great experience - the 14 hour drive from Denver was well worth it. I went to everything except the final concert. I was able to meet some great people from around the country, and had a chace to talk to a lot of artists. The concerts were fantastic (and I did manage to survive the 100 degree heat every day). I truly enjoyed seeing Arlo and Pete together again (with families). And I even got a chance to play some music on the open stage, so that was fun as well. I would recommend the experience to every Woody/Arlo fan.

Guess what? They charge ya to read the article cuz it's in their artchives & they charge ya to read it. Woody would been incensed. It's a money making racket!

Finally got to Okemah (pronounced Oh-KEY-muh), birthplace of Woodie Guthrie, the only famous person who's
had HD. His given name was Woodrow Wilson Guthrie, born July 14, 1912. There's a little park with a Woody
statue and mural. They also sell engraved bricks for $35 (better price than "The Yellow Brick Road" in Liberal
KS). We were met by Mary Jo Guthrie Edgmon (Woodie's younger sister), Randy Norman, Dee and Sharon
Jones from the Woody Guthrie Coalition. They are very involved in the Woody Guthrie Festival which is held in
Okemah, this year July 12-16. We were given a nice T-shirt from last year's event and a Woody Guthrie celluloid
button (from the Coalition) and Mary Jo gave us each a lithographed print of Woody's life in Okemah. We felt so
honored. After the photos were taken, we rode to the motel, cleaned up, and then drove about 20 miles back
towards OKC to a restaurant called Catfish Round-Up in Seminole, right off the I-40. Mary Jo was so pleasantly
surprized to find her husband of over 50 years, Hulett, waiting inside! Great food and company!
I was enthralled by so many of Mary Jo's stories. To hear her talk, of Woody, Marjorie, Arlo, Jody and Nora
just awed me. A gracious lady, living history."
