lyrics question - what's a hollihan

What is a hollihan, and why would a person go to Montana to throw one?

I have wondered about this for about 50 years, but never thought to ask an authority. Do you know?

What's a snuffy???? My late father-in-law went by that name. With a sophistocated name like Alexander EVERYONE that knew him called him Snuffy.....??? Cept preachers & cops sometimes called him by his middle name. Paul. (Or you knew my mother-in-law was mad at em, when she didn't call him Snuffy) lol
