Ramblin' Man, The Life and Times of Woody Guthrie is in the stores. Written by Ed Cray with a forward by Studs Terkel. I've just started getting into the book and my eyes were welling up just reading the introduction. Looks like a great read.

Hey John! How is it comparing to the Klein bio of Woody?

Helo Arnie, It's been quite a while since I read the Klein work and given the state of my memory these days I'm not sure how valid any comparisons I may make would be. I will say I am thoroughly enjoying the new book. Mr. Cray is the first biographer to have had full access to the Woody Guthrie Archives and while covering familiar ground I feel the new bio offers more depth than previous works, the author liberally quotes associates/contemporaries of Woody which adds alot. Through the book I am gaining new insight into the man while at the same time understanding I can never fully comprehend the man's genius.

I imagine the book will be available through the archives at some point. When it is, I think I'll walk over and pick one up in person to show support for their work. Anyway it would be a great excuse for lunch. jc

I remember reading one of Woody's books, where him and his brother (cousins) went riding around the area, stealing gas from the pipe lines. That & drinking Moonshine. Funniest part in that paticular book, is the many handles Woody carried. He was called Wood pile. Woodpecker ect. Seems for each differant occassion, he came up with another version of the name Woody.

*When are they gonna do a remake of the Movie 'Bound for Glory'??? Remakes are always kewl. As much as I am a David Carridine fan (Hell I'm a John Carridine fan as well. His Dad did volumes for movie's acting & directing)

**cut to the chase I'm in agreement with adg. Something about Carridine doesn't fit the bill???? Altho, when I think about it, those are some pretty big shoes to fill. That lil dude off that horse racing movie (toby McGuire)?? Would look the part.....If he isn't type-cast into his spiderman role??? But I'm guessing Woody wood of loved Spiderman???

i'm always in favor of another excuse to have lunch john! A book on woody is as good as any!!

it's not a new Woody biography. it's a poetry book that my english teacher turned me onto. it's called 'Sweet Nothings, An Anthology of Rock and Roll in American Poetry." and it's really damned cool. it's got a lot of Janis mentions and one i liked about the Boss called "Video Mama." BUT, to make the relevant to the topic, it's got a poem called, When Woody Guthrie Meets Bob Dylan in the Brooklyn State Hospital, 1961.

I really liked the poem, and thought it was about time my school library put something of real value onto their shelves. You can find this book here...
