I am no legend of folk music but wasn't sure which forum to post this in. If it is the wrong one, my apologies in advance. At the Presbyterian church where Mike & I attend & are members
of they are having a musical night where they want different folks in
the church to play an unusual musical instruments they might have or
any instruments they play. Well they found out I play dulcimer &
autoharp LOL & want me to play in the service. They want me to do one
song on dulcimer & then one on autoharp. Of course I'm terrified as I
always get stage fright playing musical instruments in public. LOL.

I play piano, organ (electric & pump), guitar (acoustic & electric) &
play them all by music & ear, & also play autoharp, mountain
dulcimer, & canjo (can banjo) by ear. I think I played my dulcimer &
autoharp in church once at a nite service. I play like a little kid in grade school. Really bad.

If anyone wants to hear some really lousy dulcimer & autoharp playing
then come on up this Sunday (Oct 31) & hear me & the
much better other folks playing in the service. Service is at 6 pm at
Rivers Edge Presbyterian Church here in Prince George County, VA an
hr south of Richmond, VA...

Rumor has it that Sarah Lee's been learning a tune that isn't too hard and would be just the thing for you to play! You may have heard it...around Thanksgiving. If we weren't 1,500 or so miles away, ... but you have fun, and let us know how it goes.

Hi Cheryl. On Sunday, I'll be sending positive thoughts & prayers your way from the northeast corner of California. I'm the pastor of 2 small, rural churches (United Church of Christ) & just love it when folks like you share their gifts. I've even sung Arlo songs in church with my guitar & put Arlo quotes in the bulletin. I'm sure you'll do great. Love your "Arlo Guthrie for President" signature!

Thanks for the support ya'll. Nope I don't know how to play any of those songs on that set list lol. I play by ear. Since it's in church I'll be doing religious stuff. I'm thinking about doing Cat Stevens Morning Has Broken on dulcimer & maybe something like What a Friend We Have In Jesus on Autoharp Just hope I don't screw up. Pictures dulcimer falling off my lap & finger picks flying off my fingers lol...

Morning Has Broken is an interesting song...with an intersting history. I took a course in traditional Gaelic song at Swannanoa Gathering this past summer in Asheville, NC. The teacher was Margaret Bennett, a delightful lady from a small island in Scotland. She's done a lot of historic research on traditional songs in Scotland, and has done a great job of doing the Lomax thing, and has collected lots of old songs from the native Scots over the past 45 years or so. The tune for "Morning Has Broken" was written by a lady on a small island in Scotland as a Christmas song back in the 1800's, and the tune was appropriated by another folksinger. Somewhere in my bag-o-stuff that I brought back from Swannanoa I've got the original Scot's Gaelic lyrics and a translation.
