I saw Arlo years ago at the Schaeffer Festival in Central Park NY (yes, that was YEARS ago). He had a very heavy drummer, who sang a song that started something like:
I tried reefer, couldn't roll it
Tried liquor, couldn't hold it
something something, something something,
Now I'm high as a kite on the Lord
(chorus)
Jesus is easy, just get down on your knees (3x)
He's everywhere, Jesus Christ, he's everywhere

It ended with little American flags popping out of his drums, or something like that. It stuck in my head all these years, but I have no idea what the name is, who did it, or the lyrics. Can anyone fill me in?

Thanks!

- Russ

Could this be the drummer you're thinking of?:

Possibly, the timing is right. It was probably around 75, could have been 74. Thanks for the lead, I'll check him out further. Good article!

That sounds like a neat song. I'd love to see a video of that. :)

The access link to the Rare Tape Registry seems to has, sadly, long gone dead, but there are circulating audio audience recordings of Shenandoah's (Arlo's then back-up band , not the popular contemporary country music group) version of "Jesus is Easy" circa 1976 and thereabouts. There may even be one available from the Central Park show that you referenced.

This is the song. Can't find Arlo & Shenandoah's version but here's a link to Martin Mull's. I can see the guys having fun with it. http://youtu.be/mleEpj8soMw
