All right, here we go with a question I have been mulling over for sometime re Highway in the Wind.

I tought this really great song was perfomed by Arlo in 1965 re Further, and recorded a couple years later

This was the Bus tour.

Were you on that old bus traveling with all those neat people?
That must have been hard to top, I mean the bus, the locations, and espeically the people...

In 1997 you recorded the song for Further More. yes? MC'd
love this "May the Four Winds Blow you Safely Home.")..is on the dvd cover...

**** BB's History..
I had a Retired Us Postal truck in 19 something, that we toured in when I worked at Ft Campbell, KY.. always Nashville and Centenial Park bound, your music traveld around with us that summer, went skinny dipping in a clear stream deep water pool, and attended a wedding in a cave for a GI going on his first tour of Nam...

You have been everywhere man...

I love Highway in the Wind, that is all......
Thanks,

Barbara Bellehumeur

ps
we tried to do something like the elusive Kevin Bacon game, re Arlo played with _____ who played with ____.
It is ongoing...

WOW WOW WOW W WOWO my chant for Arlo

Here it is

Sail with me into the unknown void
That has no end
Swept along the open road
That don't seem to begin
Come with me a love me, Babe
I may be back again
Meantime I'll keep sailing down
This highway in the wind

Evenings just begin the days
And follows with the night
To love you and to be with you
And say that it's all right
Love me while you have me, Babe
I may be back again
Meantime I'll keep sailing down
This highway in the wind

There's times I feel like going
And there's times I want to stay
Times that I ain't feeling well
And times I feel ok
Now you have time to love me, Babe
And I may have time agian
Meantime I'll keep sailing down
This highway in the wind

The fortune teller tells me
I have somewhere to go
I look and try to understand
And wonder how she knows
So I must be going now
I'm losing time my friend
Looking for a rainbow
Down this highway in the wind

hi barbara - i thought i'd take a poke at this...
the 'Furthur' you're referring to was a bus driven by Neal Cassady for Ken Kesey and his Merry Pranksters back in 1964-6
The original Greatful Dead members were part of the entourage as they crossed the country doing their Acid Tests. Arlo wasn't part of that particular scene (at least that we're aware of, right?)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Furthur

Many years later, Furthur (the bus) is a rusting relic sitting in Oregon. A new 'Further' was created back in the 90's.. Kesey, as well as Cassady, Garcia and others are now gone...
But the "FURTHER" festivals of the late 90's were to bring back the memories of the tours of the Dead, and was named in honor of their origin. Arlo was the MC of the '97 festival...

Now how Highway in the Wind ties into any of this is beyond me...

Hi Arnie,

Highway in the Wind, which I really believe is one of Arlos best songs ever, :roll:waswritten in the 65 to 67 time period ???? I may be wrong here, but it was recorded much later...

In 1997 the Master performed it for Further More...and it is on the DVD #7 Highway in the Wind..

I guess my question is, if it was written so long ago, where was this great song hiding.

Perhaps Arlo was not in on the original Further tour

It was an Inter National Harvetser Bus, I was a clam shell person just going to JR High near Annapolis Maryland, so I remember the Bus and thought that somewhere around that time I first heard Highway in the Wind.
I did not buy the music until 1998.

Sorry for any confusion, at times I specialize in it...

Since 2006 back to 1996 is well a few decadesback there, I may be short circuiting.

But none the less, this is a really really great song,,,

It frees me up anytime I hear it. ..I get all windy and free...
My boyfriend laughs and takes me out on his great big motorcycle..
Nice.. Life is GOOD.

"Highway" is one of my favorite songs, too, and it hasn't exactly been hiding. Arlo has been singing it in his concerts for decades. :)

Perhaps he has been performng it at concerts for years.

personally I saw him at a small Post House Tavern on a cold night in PA not too too long ago... He did not sing it at that time. He was excellent, the gathering was intimate and everyone had a really good time there.

The times I was fiortunate enough to attend concerts I do not remember it either....

I realize he performs it a lot,

But I still wanted to know if he initially Wrote it in the 60's, performed it a bit, and RECORDED it much later,in the late 90's..... '97?

Was it specifically recorded for the Further More???

Whew, tihis is getting exhausting....

Are you recalling short term or long term performances???
In th 60's 70's 80's when?

For some rason I still think he performed it much earleir than he recorded it...

It all is all relative because it is a marvelously creative song that left a giant impression on Me....

Understand???

Maybe HE will shed some light on this song of inspiration and delight....

thanks
Barbara Belle humeur..

Understand? Me? Probably not. Not to worry.

The copyright on Highway In The Wind is 1967. It is the last song on the second side of "Alice's Restaurant" (the original 1967 one and of course on the "Alice's Restaurant - the Massacre Revisited" in 1996 (the 1990s record that is adding to the confusion)).

Ah for a copy of Arlo doing All Along The Watchtower on ukelele at one of the Further Festivals he hosted.... It was neat seeing Arlo at SPAC that year...

Kurt,

Yes. I knew I heard it pre 1970

Hero to you....

I may have been doing some things during that time to cause a small scattering of cells...
Memory is hazy, but you have it exactly..

You made the night appear day,,,,

Is this from expereince you have this information, or from Arlo's bio?

I wuld love to speak to someone from the Viet Namera, Woodstock pile up andor Ohio State.
Please advise.

Rally nice starry skies to ypu...

Welcome to the site! I think the Furthur bus thngy was put on by the One Flew Over Cookoos Nest dude & he died a few yrs back I think. Never heard of Arlo being on that bus but it sounded from what I heard of it like a neat travel tour. I had fun at the one Furthur Fest show on Arlos I went to. It was an interesting experence... :)

Bios used to interest me, now I prefer the real thing.....

Where when and how can we see him again????

Thanks,

Barbara ready for bed...I will dream about touring in a bus eating my brownies and ripple wine..................
