me and my wife saw arlo friday night in keene nh. it was her first time seeing him, maybe my 5th or 6th time. she was very excited and really wanted to hear alice's rest and the pickle song. but amazingly she had never heard coming into los angeles. we both liked the woody songs and arlo songs, the kids were cute, and sarah lee is awesome and adorable. but for some reason we didn't like johnny irions. he just didn't seem to fit in, and wasn't as good a musician or singer as everybody else. no offense, but does anybody else feel this way? maybe it's because he doesn't have the guthrie genes. or the guthrie hair.

it was great hearing alice's restaurant live finally. and i loved the pickle song too. i just wish it had been 'the significance of the pickle'. much more entertaining, i love that story!

my wife teaches high school english, and every year around thanksgiving her class does a storytelling lesson. they read the alice's restaurant lyrics, listen to the song on my old cassette, and watch the part of the movie that relates to the song. then they have to write a story about an adventure that they have had. the kids actually love it! they want to watch the whole movie, but due to the lady parts and drugs, she can only show so much. maybe someday these little anklebiters will be sitting next to you at an arlo show!

i loved the woody wire part of the show, it was a real insight. actually tonight i had a woody/arlo moment, where i started telling my wife about thoreau and walden pond and ended up relating it to a hippy who got caught here in vermont living in somebody elses house while they were away. it took about 15 minutes to tell it all. she said i should go on the road.

oh, and i hope i don't look like a newbie here, but i have registered about 5 times in the past 7 years and every once in awhile my screen name and password just quit working. weird.

I'm glad you and your wife enjoyed the show. It's great that she's using AR to help the kids understand storytelling as an art! I hope you and she get to some other shows ... you're not too far away to consider the Church in May or October next year...

I do have to respectfully disagree with you about Johnny Irion. Yes, he comes from a different musical background, and he has an atypical style as compared with the Guthries, and that may contribute to your feeling that he 'doesn't fit in'... but his musicianship is impeccable! And when he and Sarah harmonize, I am transported! The only thing I can think of is that they may not have done songs that really showcase the way they work together (or maybe he was having an 'off' night) With Johnny added to the brew, the Guthrie legacy can only grow and expand.

Welcome to the site. I have to agree with Wyld on Johnny. Yep, he is a little different sounding than the others but he's great too. He sounds kinda like a young Neil Young. His solo album is also really good. If you want to hear how really good he is you'll have to get a copy of it. I think he plays the guitar great.. Sounds neat what your wife is doing with Alices in her class. Wish my classes in school had been as interesting...

it's great you got to see Arlo and family finally and that you had such a good time....we all agree on that...

gotta disagree about Johnny, though...he's a very talented young man on guitar and songwriting as well as performing....and he keeps getting better...his harmonies with Sarah are goosebumpers....he didn't get alot of solo airtime in this tour.....though his singing on "Another Man Gone" was awesome...

maybe if you have a chance to see Johnny and Sarah on their tour...you might have a different view....

What Wyld said! He was great with in the Legacy Tour when I saw it, wouldn't have beenthe same without him.

I think I may know where Barrett is coming from. I saw the CONO tour here in Illinois, when they were riding the train down to NO to help out. The set with Johnny and Sarah was not the best part of the show, which is unfortunate, since I know what a wonderful voice Sarah has and I had been looking forward to hearing her and Johnny together. Something just didn't jell for me that day. Could have just been an off day for them.

But I have heard clips of Johnny's singing other places and he is a good singer. Maybe another time I will get to hear them singing together.

I also saw him at the Colonial Theatre, 11/17. Last time was Woodstock, 8/69.

What I have to say relates a little to this forum. Let's just say I want to say it and I can't think of any other place. Likewize I took some of my family to see Arlo in Brisbane, Oz. I tell you it was the disappointment of my life when Arlo came to mingle with the crowd and I had to take my mother-in-law and daughter home because it was past their bed time. (having been a fan for many decades!) when I was at high school I have to say some of my friends had a hard time knowing why I would be excited about each new Arlo song "Guabi Guabi" for example. What is this attraction for some? In a sort of a way I felt exclusive. (Now shattered by these forums.) Nice wife you have!
Arlo if ever you read this and come to Brisbane again. please stay. I will be leaving the others at home!
