I saw that too. The photography is beautiful. This forum is better anyway. I thought it ironic that facebook could say that anyone has too many friends, especially someone as admired as Arlo. I really wanted to go see the show last year in Memphis, which isn't too far away from northeast Arkansas, but when the day finally arrived to order tickets, they sold out in an hour. It was a small venue. I know it's unlikely I will ever see one of the shows, but I enjoy the videos posted by Mrs. Guthrey.

A regular FB page is/was/maybe still is restricted to 5k friends. This frustrates 'public persons' whose list fills up pretty quickly. So FB came up with the Fan page for public persons with an unlimited list of Likes. IOW, rather than being accepted as a friend, hit the Like button and you're there. I don't know what other restrictions might apply. Arlo, Leland Sklar and other good eggs have said they like the idea of Friends and that the Fan page thing was a bit 'egotistical'. Gotta love these cats. I know locals who are eager for fan pages for themselves because "all the cool people have them". Maybe not.

Anyway, Arlo is still on Facebook. He disappears for intervals same as he does here. Jackie also posts and you can keep up with him by keeping up with her. If he's got something to say, he says it. If he really has something to say, he says it here. ArloNet is his. John Mayer gave a lecture at Berklee about self-publishing, tweeting, FB and so on as social media and he says songwriters should be wary because social media consumes the same creative resources as songwriting. He has a point. On the other hand, social media are part of the scene now for artists and getting the balance right is hard. It seems to me Arlo got this balance years ago as one of the first A-list artists to get on the web and use it to hold court and get product out there.

Arlo shares really exquisite photos up on Flickr and at this he is starting to shine and may just out do his other arts because the guy has a really good eye, really good gear and he seems to understand it. Dunno, not a photographer, but as an amateur 3D artist, I think he has an intuitive grasp of image composition and only gets better as he goes.

Anyway, Arlo hit the 5000 limit last year and did make a fan page sort of begrudgingly. He seems to disappear, reappear, and whenever there is an old dragon raising hell, he shows up sword in hand. He has had a tough time with FB trying to confirm he is Arlo by passing tests. And as we all know, the great wizards "don't do tests".

What I find really weird about the Fb pages is that Arlo's "friend" page has him at below 5000 (4792 or so last time I looked) but still says he has too many friends if you send a friend request. But it really doesn't matter much, as the wall on that page is public anyway and it's possible to comment on what he says without actually being a "friend". I tend to forget that page though because I don't get autofeeds from it and he does occasionally post something interesting there and nowhere else. But so do a lot of other people, so I survive somehow.

This place was here long before facecrook came along. Try as it may, all those people can't recreate what happens here.

The count on that page is likely posted on pageload from Javascript or a Java or ASP object that samples record counts of a table or set of tables and then updates irregularly. The table parameters for adds are probably initialized from a different counter. It's not uncommon to see discrepancies like that in big server systems particularly when different code groups are sharing code. There also may be a safety margin. When managing very large servers and loosely coupled clients, one tries to run as few big counters as possible and update them infrequently when loads are less. OTW, the counters are opening and closing the tables at high frequencies and the discs are seeking like dogs in a hamburger plant. Can we say "setting the fields on fire"?

I have the same problems with the public pages and often notifications from something Arlo posts don't show up on my page or show up hours later. Eventually someone else in his group of friends will share it and I'll see it. So FB is not a reliable heads up system. Puns intentional.
