The 2005 Dunkin’ Donuts Newport Folk Festival will open Friday, August 5th with a BRAND NEW EVENT featuring ARLO GUTHRIE and NANCI GRIFFITH at the Newport Casino at the International Tennis Hall of Fame. Marking the 40th anniversary of Alice’s Restaurant, which premiered at the 1967 Newport Folk Festival, the festival will present legendary folk musician Arlo Guthrie in his "Alice’s Restaurant 40th Anniversary Massacree Tour." The evening will also feature folk festival favorite NANCI GRIFFITH, who will appear in her own set, and The Mammals who will perform with Arlo Guthrie.

On Friday, August 5th, the festival will honor its roots by celebrating a truly great American folk musician, Arlo Guthrie. This brand new event at one of Newport’s most beautiful venues, the International Tennis Hall of Fame, will present Arlo Guthrie on his “Alice’s Restaurant 40th Anniversary Massacree Tour.” This unique evening will also feature special guest Nanci Griffith, in her own set, and The Mammals, who will appear with Arlo Guthrie.

Ticket Information
Tickets will range in price from $30 to $75 and will go on sale Saturday, April 16th, at noon, through Ticketweb or at the festival office at 770 Aquidneck Avenue in Middletown, R.I. The office will be open from 10am-2pm Saturday, April 16th. Future office hours will be posted at a later date. Call 401-847-3700 for more information.

There really is such a thing as the Newport Folf Fest!

Can you take me in your back pocket Cyndy??? (DUNKIN' DONUTS??? Newport Folk Festival??? Is that for real??)

Evidently the donut co must be sponsoring them. This was the fest where arlo & Alices got their big break. Wish I could go but it's too far from here in VA. So enjoy some donuts & a great show in my place!

It's also the folk (or folf!) fest where a young Robert Zimmerman got soundly booed for introducing an electric guitar to his repertoire.

I guess that little [/url] thingy at the end of my post makes it look confusing, but it just appeared there without me doing nothing. I saw it but found that we can't edit in this particular forum. But Terrie figured it out---sorry for the confusion.

Most of my life Newport has been one of the Festivals I've hoped to attend one day 'cos of the Arlo and Alices history and of course the Dylan thing. So to know that it is now sponsored by DUNKIN DONUTS kinda seemed a little sad to me, I mean I kinda can't get into that kinda music history being associated with a doughnut chain!!

There is a great story about what really did,or didn't, happen, that evening in July '65 with Dylan, in last Septembers Rolling Stone 50th Anniversary of Rock special edition II. Course most of you have probably read all that stuff before but for anyone who hasn't, that article gives a few different views of what went on.

i cleaned up your stray /url joe, those things can infest a house in no time if you don't stomp on 'em quickly!
And although it does kinda make it tacky (as with ALL the commercial takeover of shows/venues/stadiums etc.) at least the Folf festival is still sponsored by a company involved in making people (fat and) happy!

As opposed to my chagrin at having to attend TOMMY HILFIGER at Jones Beach Theater every summer now!!!

I don't know why I feel this way, but Ben & Jerry's Folf Fest is OK, while Dunkin' Donuts isn't....

I like to support companies that are socially and environmentally responsible, wherever possible... I use http://www.buyblue.org to check on companies, when I can... or if they aren't listed, I try to check out the corporate website to see what they are about....
