Look for "Precious Friend" - the second Pete Seeger / Arlo Guthrie double live album, released in 1982. (Warner Bros. 2BSK-3644 / Rising Son RSR-3644)

Amazing Grace can also be found on the third double live album by Pete and Arlo (1994). It can be downloaded from iTunes. You can also buy this album from Rising Son Records. "Get Stuff" on the ArloNet menu. Ooops! It seems to be out of stock for the moment.

Arlo also performed Amazing Grace at Woodstock, this is available on some bootleg woodstock releases and by download off the net quite easily

I've heard Arlo do Amazing Grace at many of his shows. Actually, the first time I heard him do it was way back around 1978 at a show at Glassboro State College in Glassboro NJ. Of course if you've got the Alice's Resturant movie, you'll already know that Amazing Grace is also played alot during the movie.

Recently I heard a recording of the song done by the Blind Boys of Alabama. It is really cool because it's done to the tune of 'House of The Rising Sun'. Being a guitar player for the past four decades I have already leaned how to sing and play it the way the Blind Boys do it. Here's a sample of the Blind Boys version. Hey Arlo, since you do both 'The House of The Rising Sun' and 'Amazing Grace' it would be interesting to hear your take on doing Amazing Grace to the tune of House of The Rising Sun. What do ya think?

I've heard the Blind Boys version & it is good. Sadly I think one of them died awhile back. I saw a coupla times this good PBS show with them & Robert Randolph in it & they did that song in it. I too have thought it'd be neat to heard Arlo do it they way they do to House Of The Rising Sun. I've also heard you can also sing Amazing Grace to the tune of the Gilligans Island theme song...

As a stupid bit of trivia, you can also sing the theme song from "Gilligan's Island" to the music from "House of the Rising Sun".

You can also sing "Pinball Wizard" from The Who's rock opera "Tommy" to the tune of "Folsom Prison Blues". That deaf. dumb and blind kid sure plays a mean pin ball!

I think someone (Ed Gerhard, if memory serves me right) told me once that "Amazing Grace" used to be sung to the tune of "The Water Is Wide". Ed's a wonderful guitarist, and I've heard him play "The Water Is Wide" many times. I get the chills just thinking about singing those words to that tune......

As I often say, I forget which stories I tell at which message board, so forgive me if this is repetition. Back about 1980 or so, a California band, Little Roger & the Goosebumps were goofing around on stage in a club & found that the lyrics to the Gilligan's Island theme song could fit into the melody of "Stairway to Heaven." They promptly put it on a 45 (younger readers---ask your parents) but Led Zeppelin got wind of it & got an injunction against sales of the song almost immediately. Some got into the hands of unscrupulous dealers, & I bought one for $5 + postage (pricey for a 45, even moreso in those days) from a dealer that advertised 'em in Trouser Press. It's an absolute riot, great to play at parties without telling anybody in advance what they'll be hearing.

Oops - can't edit here, but forget to mention that the title of the song is "Stairway to Gilligan's Island."

I think the version I wanted was the early recording by Arlo alone. His unique voice quality gave that song something I'd never heard in it before.
I was brought up in country churches, and this was an oft sung hymn.

.....arsy, your question made me wonder and i listened to Amazing Grace on Precious Friend(1982)...
arlo is definitely the main singer......it's hard even to hear Pete.....but there are soft voices backing him....
...but it's the only recording i know of.....so i wondered about concert recordings.....every time i've heard him sing it live he always asks everyone to join in.....so i don't remember ever hearing him sing it by himself......
....please let us know if you find a recording....

I have the double record album of that (member those?).........and that is my favorite version because Arlo explains the origin of the song, and as a woman raised in a Christian church we never learned that about the song.......it made the song mean so much more to me

...so today i came across that Arlo sang 3 songs at woodstock....never knew which other 2....so shame on me - an ol' hippie...ahhh, memory....
Walk the Line is one and Amazing Grace the other which i feel like i never knew....anyway, in the most recent recordings of all the songs at Woodstock - ie beyond the movie soundtrack (guess all is a flexible word here)....Walk was included but not Amazing Grace...it is however on a VHS....the origins or location i don't know.....but probably findable on the net somewhere....perhaps that is the solo you remember...perhaps not....
