I just got Alice's Restaurant on DVD a week ago and yesterday I was watching the movie and for the first time heard Arlo's commentary and it was totally awesome! I agree with Arlo the '60's did change the whole world, if it wasn't for the Germans. That decade means alot to me because I was born in the mid '60 happened I remember watching Apollo 13, Smothers Brothers, and the Beatles on TV in bits and pieces going through my mind right now.But don't remember much I was just a toddler. Imagine if there were no tie dye, peace signs, bellbottoms, love beads, rock music, or words like "peace", "groovy", "cool". The whole world would be grooving to Frank Sinatra, Perry Como, Lawrence Welk and we would also be wearing beehives, poodle skirts, bobby socks, pompadours, letter sweaters, penny loafers,strawberry lipstick and intstead of saying "groovy" we would all be saying "gravy".....EWWWW!!! Boring! we'd all go crazy man! and be angry with one another. The best darn thing that happened in women's fashions in the sixties was the miniskirts.This is the huge weapons that turned guys on! Thank you God! If there were no miniskirts there would never be an invention of pantyhose, you don't want girls to get in trouble on their dates huh? In Arlo's commentary where he states "She's wearing my coat" in the scene where Alice spends the night in Arlo's room she is wearing his coat now I thought the tradition was each time a girl wore a guy's coat the guy has to wear her dress
I have watched the movie 4 times already since I bought it and a very cool movie I just wanted to express my personal opinion on the 1960s and I want to thank God for putting me on his earth at the right place at the right time.

I agree with ya. My folks watched Lawrence Welk-- yuck! LOL. as a kids I'd go into the other room & play the Beatles on the stereo which would have my mom hollering for me to turn that mess down cuz she was trying to watch Lawrence Welk. So glad the world modernized. Thank God for Arlo...

My parents were the same way and they still are partying with Fred and Wilma and eating bronctosaurus burgers and drinking cactus juice for almost forty years now. I was just looking at photos of me and my family from 1972 my father had a pompadour and looked like Elvis and I looked like a boy in a dress because my parents took me to the beauty parlor and I always got the pixie hair cuts man, ugly! I asked my mom each time I got my hair cut "Did I come out of the barber shop?" I'm so glad
we are in the Jetsonized technology, Amen!

Strange how somethings never change. I grew up in the 60's listening to Dylan, The Beatles, Stones , Jimi Even Paul Revere. Could not understand how my Mom would listen to Frank, Dean and Elvis. Then I had kids of my own I wanted to raise them on "the classics". Arlo,Dylan, The Beatles etc.
All I got out of them was gee Dad that stuff sucks. Get with the times put on some M C Hammer, Backstreet boys. I would always make sure we always took 1/2 hour to get to my Parents house(they only lived 5 minutes away) on Thanksgiving so we could hear Alice's Restaurant twice.
It didn't take many years before they found other ways to get to their grandparents and I was left riding by myself.(but thats another story) With time and many forced trips to concerts they begain to appreciate "the classics." Even caught my daughter singing along at an Arlo Concert. Strange as it may seem in the last few years I found out that if Iam in the right mood I even enjoy Frank, Dean and Elvis. Heck I will confess I even saw Wayne Newton one nigth(pretty good show). Hes no Arlo mind you but not bad.

I listened to my parent's classic albums such as the Four Seasons, Supremes, Beach Boys, and Bobby Vinton, etc. because back then my parents did not buy records of the current artists at the time in the early 1970's. All of my classmates in grammar school thought I was a freak because I never heard of the Osmonds, Jackson Five, or the Partridge Family until other kids brought in records of the bubblegum groups and then I turned on to those groups. Also as a child when I visited my grandparents all I heard was country and western like Johnny Cash, Buck Owens, Loretta Lynn, Roy Clark, etc. EWWW!!! First of all I thought the next door neighbor was pulling on cats When I reached the third grade, my teacher brought in her albums of Arlo Guthrie and that was the first time I heard of Arlo and his music just blew me away. The first album cover of his I looked at my teacher's record collection was "Arlo" and I said saw the picture and thought to myself who is this girl? when I looked at another cover with Arlo on it I said to myself, what a cute guy! My teacher played "Alice's Restaurant", "Motorcycle Song", "Walking Down the Line", and we square danced to "Hard Times". I did not want to leave third grade and then Arlo just vanished from my my mind. Since then I have been listening to rock music (despite disco in the late '70s) and it has been a great therapy whenever I am down and out. Rock music is the best medicine

I have to admit, I will be 50 next week.... So I am an oldie but a goodie..

I recall getting my montgomery ward airline acoustic guitar around 1965 and working on playing songs...

After realizing I was no hendrix, I started playing Pete Seeger songs, and eventually Arlo songs...

I grew up less than an hour from Woodstock and recall all the traffic jams and my Dad complaining about the Thruway being back up....

anyways, I am still playing Arlo songs as well as Pete Seeger songs.....

here's to the 60's...

BTW... I got my draft card in 1975 and was on the last list..... I still have the card & I have no clue why I have not burned it....

Do you recall hearing the music blasting from where you lived near Woodstock? Do you recall hearing that famous public service announcement from Arlo: "New York Thruway is closed, man!" I even seen Woodstock on video so many times and about a few months ago VH-1 Classic channel was repeating the film all weekend and I can do a one woman show Now we consider the sixties and seventies "Oldies But Goodies" A weird thing is back in the seventies the fifties where the "Oldies But Goodies" now the fifties are "Oldies But Moldies"

An hour from Woodstock?? I live about 35-40 minutes from Woodstock!! Where did you live?? I now live in Kerhonkson!! Small world!

My hubby Mike adores Elvis & collects everything on him. Elvis is cool. I used to dislike country music & thought it was folks in bib overalls & corncob pipes. But I got Arlo's Hobo's Lullabye & noticed how country it sounded & that got me to liking country & bluegrass. We're in Princeton, WV on the way to our trip to KY & I was pleased to see that the Christiansburg/Blacksburg, VA area finally got an oldies station again after all this time of no good stations around there. For along time whenever I went thru there the only good station was this bluegrass station in Galax, VA...

I just got done watching Alice's Restaurant again for the millionth time and I observed a couple of goofs in the film. The first one I noticed when the young girl from the club brought Arlo back to her place she took her shirt off and did not take her skirt off she just sat there with no arm movement below the waist. I think when she blew her nose her skirt came off
The second goof was when Alice came to Arlo's room in New York she was wearing black boots and the next morning when she put her boots on they were brown.HMMMM did Samantha from Bewitched make a cameo in the movie? She must have been hiding under Arlo's hat and used witchcraft or maybe Jeannie These goofs are very eye catching, did anybody else notice them OOOH OOOH OOOH I just remembered Arlo's hair was changing lengths too, one scene his hair was almost to his shoulders and the next scene his hair was to his neck
and vice versa, did he have the same hairdresser as Dorothy's in the Wizard Of Oz? Hint hint hint.

I grew up in a little town know as New Baltimore, NY in Greene County, NY..

Woodstock was usually less than an hour drive, taking 9W south or the thruway... During Woodstock, We had trouble getting onto the thruway in either direction..

I remember Dad grumbling about all the trafficc even while he was going to Albany....

Never heard the music from my house, but all the AM radio DJ's were keeping us up to date on what was going on....

now that's dating yourself, when you remember listening to music on AM...

Now I live in CT and get back to visit relatives in the area whenever I can.....

Oh yes you bet I remember AM radio and all my parents could afford was a Panasonic pocket radio and it was a pain getting your favorite music station in clear without an antenna, you just want to blow up the radio with TNT!..... Connecticut is such a nice state I was born in Connecticut and lived there until 2001 and moved back in 2003. I lived in Ohio for 2 years, now I regret it. I live 30 miles from Hartford and near the University of Connecticut. I work for UCONN Dining Services. GO HUSKIES!
