Hi everyone!

I have a fitting question on Thanksgiving day. I recently moved to North
Carolina ( from the NYC area ). Every Thanksgiving day at 12:00 noon,
one of the local New York radio stations would always play the live
version of Alice's Restaurant. Listening to it bacame a family tradition.

Today ( here in NC ), I heard a studio version of Alice's Restaurant for
the first time. I have to say that I like the live version better because of
the audience participation in the song.

I'm sure this topic has been beat to death, but can anyone suggest where
I can get a CD or DVD of Arlo's live version of Alice's Restaurant?

I'd like to get my own copy so I don't have to wait for a radio station
to play it.

There's a live version on The Best of Arlo Guthrie. I think it's a Warner Bros. item, and see it every so often in the local record stores, or barnesandnoble.com sells it for about $12, but I would check with Rising Son first, maybe they have a live version. Just click on Get Stuff, to the left or type in risingsonrecords.com

A lot of the stations play the version from Alice's Restaurant - The Massacre Revisted (no hat) which was a live version at the Church on the thirtyeth anniversary. (The Nixon tape gap figures into the story this time.) The audience had been hearing the song for thirty years at that point so they react differently. I kinda like the version on Live In Sydney (the Groundhog Day variation). For crowd reaction, Alice's Restaurant (with the hat) or Arlo Guthrie's Greatest Hits may be what you are looking for. These variations are available from Rising Son as cds or iTunes as downloads (iTunes has yet another variation from the sixties).

I know that Arlo refers to the fact that he is going to have to learn it for the Anniversary tour and then tells the audience if they want hear it before then, go see Sarah... she can play it and knows the words..

Well, if you play the chord progression of Alice's Restaurant, and you explain the title of Alice's Restaurant, and you sing a verse of Alice's Restaurant, and you tell a story about Alice's Restaurant, wouldn't that be a version of Alice's Restaurant? OK, I admit it's kinda short but you must admit it's nearer to the original than the spytingler (which is also a lot of fun).

Okay, I'll give you that it is a version of Alice's Restaurant... not quite 18 minutes long...

And no where near as funny as the Richard Nixon version....

now if we can get Sarah to perform in CT and play Alice's restaurant... because after all in Live in Sindey: Arlo say's she can play it and knows it better than he does these days...
