I found this on Yahoo this morning. Nice coverage of a great idea brought to fruition. Boy, wouldn't a recording of some of this tour be nice to have, especially the two shows in New Orleans?

Folk singer Arlo Guthrie rolled into town on "the train they call the City of New Orleans," set to perform a pair of shows to benefit musicians left without instruments and gigs after their city was battered by Hurricane Katrina.

Guthrie has been performing for two weeks at stops along the train's route with other musicians. He started in Illinois, stopped in Memphis and is ending with a pair of shows in New Orleans. After a Saturday show with Willie Nelson at Tipitina's sold out, he added a Friday show.

"I didn't know how much anyone could do," Guthrie said. "We're just going to see if we can make a little dent in what's going on."

Guthrie, who made the late Steve Goodman's song "City of New Orleans" a hit in 1972, has said the idea for the tour came while watching television coverage of the hurricane's aftermath, and seeing that Amtrak resumed its service to the devastated city.

Goodman's song was based on a train operated by Illinois Central before the creation of Amtrak. The name was discontinued the year before Guthrie made the song a hit, but Amtrak christened an overnight train that runs much of the same route with the City of New Orleans name in 1981.

The Arlo Guthrie & Friends benefit tour is raising money for musicians and venues suffering since Hurricane Katrina and levee breaks left much of New Orleans under water more than three months ago.

The money raised and the equipment being donated will be distributed to performers, churches and schools with music programs by The Recording Academy's MusicCares program and Tipitina's Foundation. Guthrie's publicist didn't immediately know how much the tour had raised.

Along the way, Guthrie has performed with musicians including his son Abe and with his band Xavier, his daughter Sara Lee Guthrie, Cyril Neville, Guy Davis, Ramsay Midwood, Kevin Kinney with Drivin' Cryin' and the Burns Sisters.

Guthrie's tour is one of several efforts to help New Orleans' musicians. Singer Harry Connick Jr. and saxophone player Branford Marsalis are working with Habitat for Humanity to create a "village" for musicians who lost their homes to Hurricane Katrina.

The Tipitina's website has the info about the webcast. There's a link to click that says "webcast" some place near where I ordered tickets for last night's show. We were up at the very front on the barricade! The guy with the camera doing the webcast was walking back and forth in front of us (along with other camera people). I got some fantastic pictures! The show was GREAT! We also saw some things that we had only seen on Tv after Katrina like spray paint on the fronts of houses by owners telling they had left two loose dogs. The debris is still in piles and there are areas where no one is living. Driving past the Superdome was eerie thinking of all the suffering that had gone on there and also remembering I had one of the best times of my life in there (The Sugar Bowl a few years back when LSU won the National Championship). It was numbing to think of the two extremes of feelings - total elation to total despair - that had happened in the same building. Then as we were driving back to Walker (outside of Baton Rouge), on I-55, there was a wreck where one vehicle had gone over the side and another vehicle was hanging over the edge (Both I-10 and I-55 are raised in the entire area for over 20 miles on both including outside New Orleans because of Lake Ponchartrain and Lake Maurepas) so after sitting about an hour, most of the cars turned around and went the wrong way on I-55 and went down Hwy 51 that runs along side I-55). It was a bummer of a way to end the evening. I couldn't stop thinking of the family members that were going to get the tragic and sad news about their loved one(s). So, anyway, Arlo and friends were fantastic as expected and the night was ended with very sobering moments.
