I just 'stumbled' on to this site and read a lot of your posts and viewed some videos via the links you guys have on the site and it brought back great memories...

I grew up in Newport RI and used to go to both the Newport Folk Festival and the Jazz Festival every year as a kid and saw an unbelievable amount of talent performing live.

My favorite memory (this is how I remember the night) was a new performer being introduced as the closing act. I had never heard his name at the time but he was Woody's son Arlo!

Were any of you there that night?

Arlo proceeded to completely blow away the audience with several songs and then permanently imprinted the entire audience with "Alice's Restaurant". The song was recorded that night for the album and the rest is history. Being there was amazing that night. The back of the album mentioned everyone left that night humming 'Alice's Restaurant'. Actually we were all singing it all the way home!

I can not remember exactly what year that was but somewhere around '67? Anybody know for sure?

This past summer, Arlo played again in Newport at the 'Casino' (tennis hall of fame) and my wife and I attended with some friends. I must say that he has not lost an ounce of the enthusiasm and humor and is still a great story teller. How can he sing that song that fresh...that new...and that great... after singing it for 40 years? Amazing.

We had a great time and really enjoyed seeing Arlo again that night.

Arlo, if you are out there reading this... Thanks for the talent, humor and great storytelling! I wanted to say hello to you as we entered the casino through a side enterance and walked by you near your tour bus, but decided to give you your space. So I would like to say hello now.

I believe it was 1967 but cannot find any info on the net to confirm it.
Sounds like you were there Friday night. We did not arrive until the next
day and I don't remember Arlo performing Saturday night. My second
favorite Newport show was the 1969 Jazz-Blues Festival which was a month
before Woodstock and in my opinion was musically superior to Woodstock.
The promotor scammed Newport with the Jazz title, it was mostly rock/electric blues. Led Zep, J Tull, J.Winter, 10 Years After and many more.

I was there that year and it was great. George Wein pulled a fast one and I think the town council thought that Jethro Tull and Led Zeplin were Jug Bands! That was the last good year..
