Pete Seeger is one of the musicians naming their favorite books in this article
"Musicians on Reading ":

Pete Seeger

Banjo-player, folksinger, writer

I come from a book-reading family. At age 7 I was completely captured
by Rolf in the Woods, by Ernest T. Seton, and that was when my interest
in politics began. I went on to read all Seton's books. He held up the
American Indian as a role model of brave, honest, sharing people. Six,
seven years later, I read Pages of a Worker's Life, W.C. Forster's book
about how he rode freight trains as a kid and worked at one industry then
another. Then Thoreau's Walden, which suited me to a tee; and left-wing
books, historical books and novels, and every new Howard Fast book, as
soon as they came out -- Freedom Road, and so on.

(I agree with Corey Harris about "Watership Down", one of my favorite books.)

A book I thought was really cool was Watership Down. It was amazing
the way the author created the story of the rabbits and their society and
how it mirrored human societies.

According to his schedule, Richie Havens will be performing at a Woody Guthrie Tribute in Memphis in early April, 2000. Anyone have any other info about this concert?

Tom Paxton and Ramblin' Jack are also scheduled for the tribute concert.

Steve Goodman's "The Twentieth Century Is Almost Over" to be used in ad:
http://biz.yahoo.com/prnews/991215/nj_benz_3__1.html

Goodman wrote the score along with fellow songwriter John Prine. Goodman, who died in 1984 at the age of 36 after a 10-year battle with leukemia, was best known for composing ``The City of New Orleans,'' the popular hit in 1972 sung by folk singer Arlo Guthrie.

Ani Difranco article:
http://www.addict.com/MNOTW/hifi/980326/980326_3701.shtml

While DiFranco denies having any musical heroes, she does acknowledge being a huge fan of American folk-legend Woody Guthrie. In fact, her record label will release a Guthrie tribute album that will include performances by folk- inspired rockers Bruce Springsteen, Billy Bragg, Indigo Girls, Ramblin' Jack Elliott, Pete Seeger and others.
"Woody, he was just an amazing writer," she said.

"As for partying, it's not all rave and techno. High-mileage folkie Ramblin' Jack Elliott charmed the crowd at the Saturday night official party with his, well, rambling, stories. He almost made it through Dylan's "Don't Think Twice (It's Alright)" but kept having second thoughts about it--though he actually did two Woody Guthrie talking blues. (A documentary about Elliott, made by his daughter Aiyana is playing at the festival.)"

an article about Toshi Reagon
"...
And now singer, songwriter and bassist Toshi Reagon is trying to break out of a rich and well-known heritage: She is the daughter of Bernice Johnson Reagon, historian, scholar and founder of the vocal a cappella group Sweet Honey in the Rock.
...
Named for her godmother, Toshi Seeger, who is the wife of folk singer-songwriter and activist Pete Seeger, Reagon began her musical career after trying really hard to take a different path than her mother's. She dreamed of being an athlete..."

Re: "Bonnie Raitt has influenced many with her unmistakable blues-tinged sound, and is making an impact on music history through the Bonnie Raitt Fender Guitar Project, which teaches inner city girls how to play guitar.
