On the heels of their second collaboration together, the as-yet-untitled follow-up to 1998's Mermaid Avenue, Wilco and Billy Bragg will take their Woody Guthrie road show on the road sometime this summer.

English protest singer Billy Bragg and Chicago country-rock band Wilco will release a second Woody Guthrie album in late May on Elektra Records. Bragg said that the album, recorded in Dublin and currently named “Mermaid Avenue Vol. II,” won’t be as folky as his first Woody Guthrie album with Wilco, “Mermaid Avenue,” released in 1998.

"Wilco, Bragg Get Comfy With Woody Guthrie"
...
As the gatekeeper of the Woody Guthrie Archives, and by proxy the driving force behind a recent rediscovery of America's greatest lyricist, Woody's daughter Nora is largely responsible for these albums. And with the latest album she promises something that resembles its predecessor only in name. "This is more cutting edge musically," she says of the album. "Woody's words were at the front of Mermaid I, but this is a louder sound. I feel like they might have liked a lot of the songs as artists on the first album, but we were kind of tiptoeing through it a little bit. This one really cuts loose."
...
As for Nora Guthrie, Mermaid Avenue Volume II isn't the only thing on her plate right now. She's also been involved in Til We Outnumber Them, a live album recorded at a 1996 tribute to her father featuring Bragg, Ani DiFranco, Ramblin' Jack Elliott, Arlo Guthrie, Dave Pirner, Tim Robbins and Bruce Springsteen to be released on DiFranco's Righteous Babe label in April. She and bassist Rob Wasserman are also taking some of Woody Guthrie's diary entries that are written in rhyme and meter and recording them as improvised musical pieces with various guests. Spearhead's Michael Franti has already contributed a track, and DiFranco is committed for another. "It's a very funky and New Yorky kind of project," Guthrie says. "I tease the musicians that they won't be working on this for a year and a half. You're in the studio, you jam and you walk out. It's more like recording with Miles Davis."
...

Ramblin’ Jack Elliott Still Rolling
...
For Ramblin' Jack's part, his stature as one of the
few authentic voices in folk music is growing
strong, and it just got an extra kick at the Grammy
Awards in February.

When Guthrie's daughter accepted a
lifetime-achievement award for her father at that
ceremony, she singled out Ramblin' Jack in the
audience and thanked him "for carrying on
Woody's torch all those years."

Yesterday's festivities began with the public concert on the East Lawn of
the Capitol. The day after Easter made for a huge crowd, and there was a
little something for everyone: Latin, pop, jazz, folk, bluegrass and country.
The presence of singers such as country's Kathy Mattea, folk's Pete Seeger
and rock's Mickey Hart (loved those Deadheads in the audience) were
intended to showcase the library's vast and diverse collection of American
music.

This was fun! OK, anything with the Smothers Brothers is fun... but, the first clip (top row, left) is of the brothers and George Segal doing Phil Och's Draft Doger Rag. And, EVEN BETTER! The center clip on the second row is Pete, doing (I guess) The Big Muddy. Both were censored by CBS... and, watching now, the video part was not great for me, but the audio was terrific!
