I just got tickets to Arlo Guthrie at the Folks Festival in Lyons Colorado. This is such a great opportunity to see them in concert and I can’t wait! The festival is August 19-21 so if anyone has the time than get tickets because it will be awesome to see her perform with Patty Griffin, Taj Mahal, Steve Earl, Allison Moorer and many more great artists.

I may have to work, gotta check, that sounds like one hell of a venue.

Do any of you live in or near colorado springs? Cause i could really use a ride up there on sunday! If not, know any good hitchhiking tips?

hitchin tips.#1 Don't walk anywhere that isn't practical. #2 stand by intersections, or off ramps, that head you in the right direction.... ( people are more inclined to stop, if they have to slow down ) #3 USE destination signs... (e.p. again, more folks will stop, if they know they're going your way)

#4. Usually when your close to your destination, get used to the idea, you might have to walk that last mile or so.... This is good for the soul, ntm:a good cardiovascular work out )

#5. BE CAREFULL. Don't take rides from anyone you think is intoxicated. NOTTA good....

believe it or not, in my days of hitch hiking, I believe looking the part of a hippy enhanced my rides... ( either that or it's just blind luck ) .... But people are curious, in general, and hippys have a reputation, for being non violent..

I lived in Manitou Springs (betweeen Colo. Springs and Cheyenne Mountain) in 1970. Oh--I guess that doesn't help so much these days. But even then, it was against Colorado state law to hitch, and they WOULD throw you in jail for it. So I recommend you check the current state law before you throw out your thumb on I25.

Shit, see what you get for living on the Canadian border. I'm on the NY side, and hitch hiking is illegal, but most cops will not arrest you. Or ever hassle you for that matter.

I guess this area is surrounded by so many colleges, that if they put one student in jail for breaking this law, the jail would be full???? ntm: the poverty rate in north ny has always been at an all time low, so cops feel sorry for you.

Only had a couple, but a few troopers stopped me in my day. I ALWAYS LIED and told em my car broke down....( my car sitting smuggly in my garage,,,, but couln't drive because of DWI;s aka: DUI" convictions ) And the cops mostly gave me a ride, all the way to my destination.... I always wondered what they thought, when I did a 360, maybe wks later, hiking down that same ol piece of highway....( I speculate, he thought that fucker lied to me, or he just aint got his car fixed yet....


BUT, a great idea to remedy that, would be to have a hawks eye for the man, and if you see him approaching, your story is, you decided to go for a walk.....( common sence being put your thumb away turn around and actually walk)

YES, I know on major thouro-fares it's NO PEDESTRIANS... I guess cutting to the chase, learn how to be a good lier, to the cops....


That's funny tho.... ( not hee hee funny - just funny ) I don't ever remember anyone ever getting arrested for hitch-hiking in North NY in my 48 yrs.... Altho it is against the law, and not to repeat myself, but they do stop occasoinally and ask, " hey kid, did you know hitch-hiking is illegal"? But thats very rare....

In reading this segment it sure reminds me of the good ol days. back in the 70's and even the 80's, cops didn't have all this technology, to be able to just plug in, and know where you live, IF YOU EVEN OWN A CAR, if it's insured, ect ect ( cant think of good examples ) but in a fraction of a minute they can pretty much tell you your social security ####

NOW those were the days, when they had to take you for your word....

Just a thought... if there's a truck stop in your neighborhood, you may be able to pick up a ride without sticking out your thumb.... I know there are some really cool truck drivers out there...(Hello Nathen wherever you are!)

interesting hitching storys. Hmm. Well it's been about 15 yrs. since I've had my licence back, and my memory is kinda rusty. ntm: I promised myself, when I did get my driving privy's back I would NEVER hitch hike again...lol...

I guess hitch hiking in the state of RI would hit the top of the list. ( mid 1970's ) It used to amaze me, just how far, and how fast I could get compared to my home state.... ( the county I live St Lawrence has a larger land mass, then the entire state of RI ) Bikers were known for picking up hitch hikers..... So having had that pleasure, I can't think of a greater adrenaline rush.... ( man I was scared shit less more than once ) but never had any problems per say.

I think the most interesting ride I ever had, was here at home. Coinsodently on my way to see, Richie Havens, John Sebastion, and AG. My ride didn't show, and I had 4 tickets a friend from the college they were at, had given me... ( retail ) .... So me and a friend thought now or never, expecting, to be late. WE WALKED, about 6 miles, and a car full of College kids picked us up....( they had NO room in the car, so my friend had to sit on my lap).... Upon reaching our destination, I gave the driver a small token of appreciation.... It was a great concert, had no problem, scalping the extra tickets...

The neat thing about it, after about 45 miles, we had shared some life storys, and we had told them where we lived... The next night, those same 4 college kids, stopped in to visit.... For the better part of a yr. they visited on a regular basis..... One was an exchange student from Africa. Altho I had a terrible time with his accent, we became great friends, so to speak... ( makes me wonder what they're up to these days. )

My freakiest moment in hitch hiking. this beautifull gal picked me up, and was friendly. We talked. She told me she needed help on the farm she had just moved into..... After contemplating asking her for a job, I asked her if it was okay to smoke.... Neither of us had a light, but she suggested, there's some matches in the back seat. Your welcome to them... AND when I reached around to look in the back, there was this German Shepard Dog, the size of a wolf, sleeping..... Lets just say, I forgot about the smoke.... She was smiling when I told her, " didn't know ya had a dog"! She laughed and said he was a sound sleeper, and she didn't go anywhere without him...

yeah Jonah, thinking about my hitchin days, brings back allot of memories.
