Thanks so much for the great pix, the reviews, and the commentary. It's a shame about the turnout, but a) that seems to be a problem in towns where a lot of musicians live, and b) them's just the breaks sometimes. Most people I turned on to the show hadn't heard anything about it; or if they had, they had no idea at what time, or how much, it was going to be.

Ramblin' Jack was there, too? Man! Now I'm totally bummed. Saw him at The Joyous Lake a few years ago -- or rather, at The Lake, as it was called by that time. Oh, well. Hopefully I'll make it to the show in Germantown and, with any luck, this will mark the begining of a trend (so there'll soon be shows in Midtown and at Tom Lee Park and Mud Island and ...)

One of my neighbors is in the quite good Minivan Blues Band (among other groups, and he counts himself among the few and far between who are able to support themselves as musicians). Anyway, he went to the show, and I'm pretty sure he's under 30.

My niece lives up near Boston. (She's going to Harvard. I am so proud of her!) The show that got her all excited about the Guthries was up thataways and, while it wasn't this particular show, she was born in '79.

Musical generations are all of about four years though, these days . If names aren't kept out there, that's all it takes for the next crop of kids -- even those in the heart of the music scene -- to have no idea who someone is.

About getting CD's: try Rising Son Records elsewhere on this website. There's all kinds of treasures to be found. You might also want to check out The Smithsonian's Folkways record label. Again, while it isn't this particular concert, there was a tribute to Woody Guthrie a few years back. You would probably love it. Everybody plays on it -- and I mean everybody.

I'd love to hear more about who played last night and what songs got sung. Maybe it'll be in this week's Flyer. Or maybe someone will tell all of us about it.

Another one under the age of 22, I didn't arrive until 8:30 or so, cause I didn't get off work until 8 o'clock out at the borders in germantown, but I wouldn't have missed this show for the world, would have like to see Arlo perform more, but the show was fabulous none the less, and I will definitely be going to the show at GPAC in February.

I remember the Folgers commercial. First time I saw that I thought man that sure sounds like Arlo and if it's not that person sure is doing a good imitation of him. The next time I called his office to find out about what his newest gigs were, I asked if it was him & it was. I have it on a video tape somewhere around here in the archives lol. Neat pics! the artist who performed i am a snowman is very talented local memphis artist corey brannan , as far as how much arlo played i was told it is because he has a contract to play gpac in feb so he could not do a whole set , the crowd filtered in it was a vey good near capicity crowd by 8.00 some outlets were stating doors at 7 show at 8 instead of doors 6 show 7 that is why the crowd was lite early i got there at 7 15 and i was in the back i can not praise the burns sisters enough i must admit i was not familiar with them before tuesday now im hooked good luck tommorrow i will be there in my prayers

It's actually 'The City Of New Orleans.' Everyone knows it, the only problem is that young children tend to become hypnotised into always instinctedly smelling coffee whenever the song is played.


That, and the pure genius of select business practices is why Starbucks can get away with charging six bucks for a cup of coffee.

Yep. They didn't show him in the ad sadly but he was doing a great job at singing "The best part of waking up is Folgers in your cup"...

It's reassuring to know that the last minute turnout part of The Guthrie Effect hasn't changed. People can be -- and are -- blasé about many things, but going to an Arlo show is rarely -- if ever one -- of them.

.....Bummer that Arlo was not revealed in the ad.... now I think of the black and white pic of Hawaiian morning by the window shade inside the inner sleeve booklet of the "Mystic Journey" CD. An mp3 file of him singing the slogan would mean something...... when waking up every morning instead of drinking coffee listen to a sugar vocal pipe call it "The Breakfast of Champions"
